Which climbing spurs?

If you don't want to spend much money to try spurs I'd get an older set off eBay or something rather than the Sport Climbers. I don't think i've ever read a good review about those things lol. If you find that you like them you can upgrade as you go like I did. I snagged a set of Gen1 carbon Geckos on eBay for $280 last year and will never part with them. 2.6lbs of glory!

Hey Jared, do you still have your climbrite aluminum spurs? Any interest in selling them?

I can understand about the sport climbers

I have the evoke aluminum climbers. I have practiced with them several times now and have had no issues with them. The pads are probably not as comfortable as the climbrites or gecko's, but I am happy with them. You will probably want to remove the "pleather" bottom strap which is what most of us are doing anyway and the large Velcro top strap needs to be cut off same as most other brands people are using.

I have always used Klein ...30+ years. With strap mods they are under 5lbs a set. I'd love some Gecko Carbon at about 1/2 the weight.

As others have said, eBay/Craigslist etc should get you started. No need to go all-in until you determine if you like them. I've gone all-in on stuff I thought I'd like only to sell it for 40% later. By using the sites mentioned, you can probably find a decent deal ...although season is just around the corner and practice will be pretty important.

Also, where I climb, pole spikes are all you need IMO. I don't like the actual longer tree spikes. Again ...my opinion.

+1 on the pole gaffs. The tree gaffs are so long they make climbing for the first few times more difficult, I think.

I bought some Klein with the tree gaff and they’re pretty scary lol. I found them used in marketplace for super cheap.I’m pretty new on the forum but I’ve read some encouraging threads about spurs so I may spend some time trying to get comfortable with them. I’ve been using screw in steps and I have some diy sticks for public. The screw in are a lot of work.

Its hard to learn to trust yourself when you first start climbing.What you got to know is that the depth your hooks are in the tree is not what holds you up It is the angle of the gaff in relation to the tree.As long as you have the gaffs pointed toward the heart of the tree you will never cut out.

Agreed and I am new to using gaffs, the problem I have with the tree gaffs is that they do not penetrate the tree to their entire length. There is at least an inch that never enters the tree and it mentally you feel like you are not close to it. Is that normal for the more expensive gaffs or do I just need to sharpen mine?

That is normal. The key is more about angle into the tree than it is about depth of penetration.
