What was the down side of using the LW strap as a tether? Just curious because I was considering using the buckle and loop and getting a longer piece of webbing to make it around 8’ long. Seems to me that cinch type buckle would be fairly easy to adjust.

@Nutterbuster with the system being compacted as it is you could always double wrap the tree if your strap is slipping. This will mean a longer tether but not much weight or bulk added by doing so. I would try the girth hitch first.

Not strong or secure enough. Most cambuckles max out at 500lbs, and are not made for life support. This buckle is good for around 4,000lbs, and is to my understanding advertised to be used as life support.

I will say that while I was never quite crazy enough to use one at height, I used a cambuckle strap many times squirrel hunting because it was very compact and quick to deploy from a jacket pocket. Then I started just using my linemans belt, which was technically heavier and bulkier, but stores well daisychained across my butt and csn be used to prep any good trees I find.

Never had an issue. That being said, flat, 1" webbing and spring-loaded cambuckles are nowhere near adequate for a tether.

I've blown buckles and 1" non-tubular straps many times hauling kayaks and windsurfers rooftop on my car. The straps are much more susceptible to dry rot, and buckle breakage is just unpredictable. IF you think about it, LW never uses them in "life saving" situations: holding the stick on the tree, or the stand on the tree, not the hunter on the tree...

So here's what showed up today. 7oz plus carabiner for 7 feet of tether + loops and knots. Packs to the size of nothing worth mentioning. Buckle is 18kn rating.

It's very simple to tie the water knots. The buckle was something like $20. Cost of webbing is negligible. My system (and a lot of other guys) is only as strong as a webbing bridge, so I'm not worried about that. The water knot at the buckle end can easily be clipped into the biner for redundancy in the case of buckle failure, and also serves as a stopper knot. Adjustment is very, very easy. Almost as good as ropeman, and better than a prussic. Doesn't bind under load at all.

I played with it for about 15 minutes in the yard at ground level. I like it A LOT. The buckle is beefier than I thought it would be, and I think I'd trust it fine at height. The webbing is stronger than my HSS tether, and very cheap and easy to replace when it wears.

Am I missing something, or did I just discover the ultimate tether? Lightweight, packable, easy to backup, easy to inspect and maintain, and rated for a higher load than a ropeman while still being stupid-easy to adjust. It's also about as cheap as they come. What's not to love?

If you see something, say something. I'm really leanong towards taking this dang thing hunting this weekend.

Also, bonus pic of a kitty I'm taking to the taxidermist tomorrow. Never seen such a pretty specimen. Nice and speckly, and such poofy little cheeks!

It was really nice of that cat to lay there for you to take a picture!

This is the color webbing I'm hunting. I've only ever seen it offered by Summit, and have no idea if it's nylon or poly, or what the rating is.

But 6ft of that with a 4" loop on one end and something like red's link on the other would be very interesting I think.

I have a friend that has a couple hundred feet of this stuff on spools in his barn. I’m sure I could get my hands on some of it. Just say the word.
