Why are 1sticks so short? Educate me please

I have been looking at some of them and the step spacing seems really close, like 16" or less. Why?
Easy to pack up and not as much bulk. They are also easy to maneuver when making moves climbing. You have aiders connected to them to get your height as necessary. You can one stick with a 32” stick if you want. The short or mini ones have just become popular.

I guess with an aider, a longer climbing stick would just be silly. Makes perfect sense now.
You got it! For example: You could have a 1.5’ stick with 2.5’ of aider (steps) for a total of 4’ or you could have a 2.5’ stick and a 1.5’ aider. Same length of climbing but you have to deal with that extra foot of metal on your pack and when you climb.

I went a bit longer than most at 18” but in really like the added length b/c it gives a bit more stability against kick out by havaing the stand offs farther apart
Yea I agree. there’s a point where the one stick can get too short. I like 18” because it is a functional step distance. If you go much shorter than that you could just as well be climbing with a platform with an aider.

I run a 15” UOS and have never had a problem with kick outs, but I must admit that I have often wanted to try an 18” just to see how it is wrt shins on that ultimate platform. I also used a buddy’s 12” and there ain’t no way in hades I would use that thing.

Yeah I’m 6’6” so that’s all relative as well. If I were shorter I’d probably be fine with it. Plus I always try to factor how I’m gonna pack it. I think a little longer stick straps to the pack better

You climb higher with a shorter stik per move if like most guys you only stand on bottom steps.
I like standing on top for max reach.
If you stand on top step then length doesn't matter as much because your reach is the same.
I would trade my full size beast one stik for a mini beast stik. I will install the cam cleat on the mini.
What a deal! I have two cam cleats on hand.
With my knee surgery its hard to reach and even harder to step up. Just too much strain on my knee.
I love beast stiks.

exactly... I got a 12" EWO stick and had regret right after I purchased... feared it was going to be too short... not only did it not matter and work great, but it's so awesome to hook onto my fanny pack without ever grabbing branches, etc.

I modded a muddy tube by adding an EWO LP up top and ULS below and it’s a tank on the tree for the same reason stated above. It’s still only 4.4 lbs w/o the 3 step Ultimaider.

Short is nice but to short is a thing. My stick was 15” when I built it. I got greedy with packability and weight so I cut it down to 12” and I’ve regretted it since. I finally got my cam cleat in a spot that works well for stick stability but there was a lot of fiddle factor

I was looking at this 10" one stick. Whats your thoughts on this?

Agree with this. 15"-16" is my preference. I like being able to extend my reach just that 3-4" the climbing up the actual stick, just more comfortable with it.
