Wisconsin Packing out deer in 5 pieces

In Wisconsin the DNR stands for "do nothing right." I have told that to game wardens already. Too much legislative oversight in the regulations process.

Not the most sensible. I called the local game warden before the season (the individual that would be writing a ticket if such a situation arose) and had a good discussion about what constitutes reasonable removal, number of parts that it had to be broken down into, and wanton waste. I’d suggest that others do the same. Also note, there is a bit of an unclear area there with regards to what can/can not be done before or after an animal is registered.
The rule is vague and stupidly written, intentionally.

Basically if you write a law that is hard to pin down, it allows a lot more leeway for local officials to prosecute. Think about this scenario, you catch a poacher, you got this person on one charge, but then, hey they broke the deer into 6 pieces and detached the head, now you can throw that charge at em as well, gives a prosecutor way more leverage when plea bargaining or it goes to trial (not as likely but...). In my conversations with game wardens, they have a tremendous amount of discretion, and they can kind of pick and choose what they want to enforce. By keeping the law sufficiently vague, they can choose to prosecute if they feel like it, or "cut you a break", a lot of time depending on your interaction with them. I am with Maverick1 here, give your local game warden a call, and get to know them, when you mess up they will be there, and if they at least know you, they will probably be more lenient if you made a slight infraction. These laws are written vague and stupid for a reason, gives the enforcing agency more leverage.

I agree with that. I haven’t talked to a game warden directly but in talking to other hunters that have it sounds like it is very much left up to the wardens to make the call. To me if you did everything else by the book and only left the gut pile you could probably get away with a few more pieces.

This is a dumb rule that I hope they change. I think it's mostly due to CWD concerns. I have multiple gripes with this rule, but mostly I think it just makes it harder to get the deer out rather than make it easier. I hope they change this in the future, but I doubt it will happen.
