XOP Hand Climber Seat foot straps

IMPORTANT

If you run the platform to tight on the tree (The climbing strap) when you descend, the strap can get lower than the platform and the platform starts to fold. So practice your foot technique...if the platform is getting tight, you need to move down just a little at a time and keep the strap oriented in the right place.

Rappel down is easier....

So true.

This is what I do also.

My main tether to the tree runs all the way to the ground as my rappel line anyway (and safety descent if my platform gives way).

When up in the tree, the line is just loosely coiled on the platform.

How is that Bungee fastened? Do you feel like it keeps the platform more stable when you lean sideways? Can you rotate around the tree without disconnecting it?

The bungee is just there so that the whole platform does not slip and fall down the trunk if I accidentally lift or knock it via the foot straps. I saw somebody else doing it on the web (don't remember who/where) and I just copied because it made sense when I was up in the tree.

I'm thinking about using some Ameristeps in conjunction with the handclimber. Stop climbing a couple feet below where I want the platform to end up, then attach the strap for the steps. Once that's done, continue to climb up to the steps, and then hook the traction belt over top of one of the steps. While this may not stabilize the climber much, it may help to keep the climber from falling down the tree trunk. Will have to play with this idea to see if it is beneficial. This idea of not having to carry climbing sticks really appeals to me.

Just know your climb might take a few more minutes and you will be more limited on tree selection.

I generally like the kind of trees that work with the Climber though.

I'm also practing climbing with aiders on cam straps (hung like climbing sticks)

I totally agree with your tree selection comment. Crooked trees can be a pain to hunt from even once you've managed to get set up. Then, again, sometimes it's the tree in the best location so you just deal with it and might have to adapt your climbing method.

For stabilizing platform use a cam strap or paracord on the traction belt in front of tree. Just put cam belt or paracord around traction belt and pull it tight it should make it solid. Have had climbers that came with belt for that app.

Summit also makes a set of stirrups that attach to foot platforms on each side to lift it with your feet. Not sure if they will fit on hand climber seat but when it gets here I'll let you know I have a set on my climber will try and see if it works better than strap.

Are these seats still commercially available? I’ve been looking for a LW hand climber seat, however with little luck. This may be a great alternative if I can find one.
