2020 - the year of ...............

Maybe it is just me and my experiences but I have been hunting over 30 years now. I see far better ethics when it comes to shot selection than I did when I started. Not saying that there isn't room for improvement, but I have seen that come a long way.

I think something that is lacking a lot in the video world is how to execute the final moments of a hunt- from when a deer is first seen approaching and it’s obvious it will be coming in range, until the moment the arrow is loosed. Lots of reading material on it. And something that can be had with experience. But I think some videos going over how to execute these situations, what to pay attention to, etc, would be great for new folks.

It will gather a lot more respect coming from the high body count folks such as yourself!

I agree that is something that would be a good information video as there isn't alot of information on that. Probably because it is so situational and there is so many variables? For example, Is it early season and the deer is casually feeding, is it rut and the buck is chasing a doe, is the deer alert, is the deer heading towards your downwind side, how many shooting areas do you have where the deer is headed, and we could probably list another 20 or 30 things pretty easy.

I think to really cover it, it would take some time and would make a good length video to really capture alot of those variables.

My vote would be year of education.

To me it's simple: read and study. I believe there is a wealth of information here.
  • New folks read and digest before you ask "what's the best....?"
  • Pros don't settle for the way its always been
  • If you are in the middle pick something out of your comfort zone and try it (safely!)
Don’t know if it’s possible on here, but having a centralized repository of “editors’ gear favorites” or something like that would be hugely helpful to many newbies (not viewed as ads or endorsements). It’s easy to say “just look at the hundred previous threads on that topic,” but the substantial amount of information on here can be very difficult to parse through and understand the general consensus. We have to help people get drawn into this; we can’t assume everyone will just look through a bunch of forum threads and get hooked. I think that’s why YouTube channels like NutterBusters do well—people want to know what well respected, dedicated hunters think about stuff because it’s much easier than engaging in a deep-dive research project. Another option would be polling or something like that. Just a thought!

If it wasn't for redundant threads message boards eventually run out of things to talk about and would die. Now you don't want 20 threads going at a time about what is the best climbing stick, but old topics revisited are sometimes good. Sometimes someone has a new perspective on something that might just change the way you think on the topic. Also right now with the saddle market, there is a ton of new products popping up. It isn't like ladderstands where not much has really changed for a while. There is alot of innovations right now in the saddles.

I like the idea of the year of education. It would be nice if PROVEN experts in certain fields could share a lot of knowledge on a particular subject. I know there are threads out there like this to an extent but they are polluted with comments that don't relate to the subject or others giving advice that they probably shouldn't give. Threads that come to mind immediately would be something like sewing instructed by @ckossuth or @Squirrels, some form of tactics by @Dewey, @flinginairos ,etc, and so on. Wouldn't have to be too crazy but every bit of information helps and I am willing to listen.

I’m honored to even be mentioned in the same sentence as the Michael Jordan of sewing

Yes to fbwguy's suggestions. I would also like to add, the Year of Inclusion. Doing things and making efforts to get more people hunting and thinking about hunting and its role in conservation. I am excited my middle daughter will be 12 this February and has expressed an interest in bowhunting!!! I cannot wait to go on some hunts with her and have her in one of my Bowhunter Ed. Classes.

Hunting with your kids is the best hunting there is in my opinion. Very cool to be there and mentor their hunting journey.

On a personal note, this is the year Mikey is buying a saddle.
I agree that there is a ton of information to be found here and it behooves one well to read a bunch first and then ask questions.
I am a total newbie to saddles and climbing methods but i think i have my method and saddle picked out. So the questions will come later.
Education is always a good idea,as is trying to better the image of hunters in general. I am trying to do what i can with the people i encounter.
I think this site is very well organized and user friendly and it seems there are great people on here as well.
Keep it up!

I appreciate the kind words. :) But I'm very, very small potatoes on the YouTubez, and for good reason. I can barely speak king's english, much less edit a video.

So you're saying the Hawk seat makes a good DIY Platform??? Awesome thanks.

LOL
Be sure to use a dental floss tether with it too! I doubt any newbies will bother to read that but if so, DON'T DO IT!

I like all the ideas posted for the year so far. Eduction is what this site has been about from the start, so it is fitting.

Personally, it is going to be the year of simplification. Time to eliminate the complexity and get back to focusing more on hunting than my hunting method. I used 3 different saddles (4 if you count a combo) this fall and all sorts of tethers, 3 platforms, and every climbing method known to man. I grew tired of aiders/swaiders/knots/hoists and all the other gadgets. I am going to stay on the ground with my ghille suit as much as situations allow and only going to use 1 stick or my custom Tree Lounge climber/platform and rappel down this year. I will use the rappel rope as tether going up and it will double as my pullup rope. Simple fun!

Thanks for the great information. I appreciate your knowledge and expertise. For a new guys like me, it's going to definitely save me trials and tribulations down the road. Oh, and a lot of money.

Year of Unity. And I don’t mean hippy tree hugging “let’s not argue with each other about our differences” I mean unite, be more organized, punch with the full weight of our community, “the SH effect” is frickin real. But instead of being victimized by it would could LEVERAGE it. We can get politicians to listen to us, we can get MASSIVE discounts if we want to leverage the scale of our buying power.

But only if we are united. And organized.

That starts with leadership.

Not it :tearsofjoy:

I like this thread, I've been thinking about this for the past few weeks for my own 2020 season. Love the idea of 2020 being the forum's year of Education.

Personally, it will be the year of:
Quiet- everything is getting silenced, not just my hard gear. I'll be wearing fleece type garments, softer sole shoes(maybe mocassins?) I'll be sewing up a fleece backpack too.

Soft -A softer look, I've seen where people just kind of mist everything with a flat tan, you can still see the pattern under it, but knocks down the shine. Everything is getting hit. It's also amazing how some camo can be shiny, getting rid of that.

Minimalism- I've been doing this for a 4-ish years now, I've got it pretty much dialed in for how I hunt. Time to sell all the extra gear that I've tested and focus on what works. This also means only taking what I need to the tree, things go so much smoother when you don't have to search for your stuff in your backpack.

Preparation- Nothing worse than packing your stuff into your backpack at the car as it starts getting gray light... I want to be packed up and ready way in advance this year. I'll be doing the usual scouting, but I actually plan to pick specific trees and entrance routes, we'll see how much time I actually have to do this.

Focus- I'm lucky to be hunting in a spot that allows deer to get old. I will be killing one of those old deer this year. Every sit will be focused on that goal from the start. I'm getting better at it, but sometimes I find myself setting up where I'll see more deer, not the one deer. I'm going to leave my doe tags at home till I kill him or it gets to be late season.

My season just ended yesterday, it was a ton of fun, and got some great deer. It just makes me more excited for the 2020 season. Good luck to everybody!
