Things I'm Changing after Saddlepalooza

@g2outdoors mentioned (and I quickly ordered) a “loop turner” for sewing/crocheting. They have super thin ones. We didn’t have anything small enough to bury the tail on my 7/64, so I’m waiting until the loop turner comes in.

I missed all of the amstel lessons as well, I need a list of crap to splice.

Fid and a loop turner, and obviously amstel, anything else?

Just out of curiosity why are you guys using a second linesman instead of using your tether?

I forgot to buy a fid when I bought my amsteel. Watch the first 5 minutes or so of this video:

So I did this method for the 1/4" (pretty close to 7/64"). Works like a charm. He's got a video as well for making a locked brummel that is super easy to follow as well.

Cheers
It's not very close in size honestly? About double the size no?

Much handier than a tether for negotiating branches. Light, easy to grab it, use it and toss back in the pouch.

@g2outdoors had a lot of fids he made from various sized knitting needles cut at an angle. They are light metal, and hollow. When cut at a 45 they make almost a perfect professional fid. Maybe he can post a pic.

Edited: autocorrect does not like the word fids

Excellent comments on fids, splicing, and rope diameter. I have a complete video on Amsteel coming this weekend. I'll cover all the essentials and show all the splices.

It's super easy. I think @IkemanTX and @Boudreaux would agree, splicing seems way more complicated than it really is. Hopefully once you see my video, you'll be ready to give it a try.

Here are a few photos. I have it girth hitched but I would splice it right on there next time. It expands to about 48 inches which works well. The green pouch that I sewed into my other pouch keeps it from coming out when I take out my lineman’s belt.
Hope that helps. Let me know if you need any other details.

A video of you using it would be a big hit.

Nice! Looks awesome. How long did you make the main line?

2 1/2 of my arms! LOL. Just a touch longer than the standard ropes that come on the Muddy Pros. I had one in my home office where I was making the pack holder - didn't have a tape measure but figured I wouldn't be in a tree bigger than the Muddy could go on! Probably could make one shorter for sure, but I'd rather have the excess. Still going to try the Amsteel "multi-loop" accessory rope that I showed you mimicking your looped webbing idea. I think it'll work good as long as it doesn't try to slide down the tree when the bow is removed, or roll-over from the bow weight. I'll post a pic below. Certainly NOT elegant, but if this works, super easy and compact with some small S-Biners.

Looking forward to it.

I just ordered some amsteel in 1/4 and 7/64 with a splice needle and loop turner. Here we go - missed demo at SaddlePalooza but looking forward to the videos

It is not hard at all - the 1/4" would be much easier IMO, but the 7/64" isn't bad either IF you have the right tool I'm guessing. Burying that short tag end is the only tricky part.

Same here. Where did you get the loop turner and splice needle? Does Dutch ware have them? Fabric stores here had no fids. Didn't look for a loop turner.

Yep. Turner was $7 and needle was $1

You can get fids (have to cut them) and loop turners at Walmart.

I looked there. Or maybe it was Joanne Fabrics where I looked. They didn't even know what a fid was. Loop turner, I'll have to ask about that one.

Is a splice needle different from a fid? I want to get a fid for working with 550 Paracord also, any clue what size that would be?
