This is not meant to disrespect you at all but never call foothold traps legholds. The anti’s love to say trappers are out there setting cruel and mean traps that break the animal’s legs and what not. The truth is trapping is the most regulated of the outdoor pursuits. There are jaw size restrictions in all states depending on if you’re trapping on land or water. In new York for example, you cannot set a foothold trap on land that has a jaw spread greater than 5.5” or about a 1 3/4 or 2 depending on the make or manufacture. This ensures that the target animal gets caught on the padded foot where if a non-target like a pet were caught, the animal could be released and the animal would have suffered little to no damage. You could always set leg hold traps for totes, and catch them. Leg hold traps are very humane, and will not hurt the dogs. Once you catch them call the pound. Or, take them to the pound. There is actually an article in the Meateater news letter that discusses how Yote trappers actually catch strays unintentionally on occasion, and how the owners react. Some good, some bad, but the dogs are never harmed by the trap.
