2018 Live from the saddle....

I have three days left of my season. I got out to my truck and it's raining! With only three days left I didn't want to get all my stuff wet so I opted to wait. If it where my last day I would go in the rain.

The weather has really been a struggle this year. Steady horizontal rain all night at 45º here. That's incredibly warm for this time of year. I too opted to keep my gear dry and stayed home last night. Got up this morning and all the snow is gone and its still raining. Tomorrow morning is supposed to be in single digits. Should make for some interesting climbing.

I've always been hesitant to bow hunt in the rain for fear of loosing a deer. This year a friend harvested a huge 10 in the rain which gave me second thoughts. Two weeks later six of us spent hours searching for two nice bucks that were shot in the rain, we never found either deer. I don't know if it was because of bad shots or the rain but by the time the search began there was no blood trail. One of the guys sent a picture of lung blood so he had a decent shot at least. The other guy felt he had a good shot marked last blood and got us to help buy the time we got there the blood was gone and only the marker remained.

Rain (and snow) certainly can throw a wrench in the works. I enjoy hanging out while getting covered in snow - really peaceful and beautiful - but i try to at least choose sites with a bit of additional care with an eye to recovery in such cases. Sites that are a bit easier bto grid search at minimum.

In my limited experience I don't worry too much about rain washing away blood. I've found a liver shot deer after a night of downpour. It wasn't fun, but can be done. I do want to contact the local blood tracking dog handler in the area, just so I have a back up. Snow is a whole different story, 15 minutes of good snow and you're screwed.

Another awesome morning for deer hunting!

First kill from my saddle. Four deer running thru the woods with this guy following he stopped.

That's the only thing I've killed from the saddle this year too. Still trying though. It was a little chilly this morning. I didn't notice w hat the temp was on the way out but the truck thermometer said 12 F when I got back there.
