2023-2024 Waterfowl Thread

Man I had my best waterfowl hunt yesterday without killing a duck. I did everything right. I was on the X. I called to a single and he turned and cupped up in the decoys and then 4 minutes later I had a group 6 land in the decoys without even calling. Unfortunately they showed up 3 minutes before shooting time and realized the duck swimming in circles wasn't real and bailed. Such a fun hunt though to have them decoy as planned. Not much was in the air after shooting time started. I had a group of 3 go by with no interest in checked me out and then a group of 8 took a peek before moving on. Can't wait for next week already!

Hey @dalton916, got another black duck on Saturday :)

@redsquirrel, I'll let you in on a secret that will elevate your duck hunting to heights that will make you wonder why anybody would chase a piney-woods billy goat.

Repacking my bag for the next trip right now. I have this stuff as my breakfast kit:

Take the mug, and put 2 packets of instant grits of your choice in it, along with the folding spork and 1 Borden's Cheese wedge. These little morsels are shelf stable, and delectably gooey in grits. When you're done eating, just stuff the wrappers and spork back in the mug and throw it back in your pack. You can have a hot breakfast in under 5 minutes and for about a buck-fiddy that will make you wanna slap your momma.

For coffee, I buy this just for duck hunting and backpacking: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Starbuck...D6hZdTYWn7BeG0T2mHeAFNb6wMikhWLhoCkYUQAvD_BwE

I'm not generally a fan of Starbucks' coffee, but they make about the best instant coffee I've found. My wife drinks it and it took her several backpacking trips before she realized it was instant. Everything linked to packs up in a small daypack along with a box of shells, insulated coffee mug, toilet paper, a liter of water, and a jacket. If you're hunting timber, you can buy Jetboil's hanger and still be in business. If you're in marshy ground without a boat or stump, my buddy has one of these that he keeps in his jet sled: https://www.amazon.com/iClimb-Ultra...J6eagekEyYgL8bMa9owr2ps7B1hoCyWMQAvD_BwE&th=1

But usually we're camped on the edge of a creek, tupelo swamp, beaver pond, or in a boat.

Amos outdid himself today. Fetched up 6 birds out of a creek with 5ft banks that went straight down. I watched him do it and still don't know how he got back up each time. Dude has become a full-send maniac when it's time to get a mouthful of feathers.
You keep posting these pics and I might just end up moving down to SW AL or SE LA...

Sorry to just jump in here, but who is plucking their birds? And who is plucking them with wax?!

my wife likes roasting whole mallards minus the wings catching the drippings and making duck fat gravy for mashed potatoes and dipping the meat in!

Started plucking with wax during this last 3 day waterfowl spurt, and I am convinced there is no other way to get the job done, and yes I tried dunking in hot water already! lol

If I pluck, it's without wax. It's not needed. Push the feathers off in the direction they go, less mess and easier. All I typically need is my thumb. A rubber glove helps get more "grip".

I can tell how many ducks a guy has killed as soon as he goes to remove the feathers.

Took my boss, his wife, his brother, and a friend of his on a New Years shoot. Everybody shot birds, so I'm definitely asking for a raise come my next quarterly!

Once I'd fulfilled my obligations as a guide, Amos and I walked the creek banks and flushed up my own limit.

Been an awesome season. 3 years of training is really paying off. And that 50 year-old Beretta is just a joy to shoot.

Hey guys, should start by saying idk anything about waterfowl hunting. I thought tomorrow I’d try to jump shoot some. How do they act like start of the day to the end? If I go in the morning are they gonna be trying to get up to fly and they will be flying early morning? How does all that work? Thanks.

I always pluck them but I’ve never used wax. I do use a propane torch after plucking to burn away any down left.

Ran traffic on a green Barley field yesterday. Was set up between the roost/loaf and the bean field they really wanted. There was probably 1500 ducks and 1000 geese that have been using the flood control lake since the cold snap. Buddy and I were able to kill our first specks ever (mine is going on the wall) pulled a few ducks (would have had more if I'd have brought a couple spinners) including a drake wood duck. Probably my last bird of the season. Kinda felt sad shooting him. This morning is the only hunt where Amos wasn't with me. Buddy wanted to go today and pointed out that Wednesday was our season ender, and rain is moving in tomorrow. Sadly, Amos was at the kennel this morning because we went out-of-town this weekend.

I'll be skinning this guy out and trying to use him to tie some flies for redeye bass fishing this summer.

This past weekend was awesome and I don’t think I will be able to top for a while. We jumped a few thousand birds getting into the hole mid morning and they flew back in all day. Had a few groups of 50-100 pintails work throughout the afternoon. Teal were swimming in the decoys about 50% of the hunt. It was a very cool experience.
