2024 Turkey Thread

You shoot them wet ones in the face, same as dry ones.
On this property I bowhunt them only. We are seeing the benefits of no run and gun hunting on this small tract. Hopefully it continues. So, I'll shoot them in the speculum when and if they get within range and they don't die of exposure in this wet cold.

I get to start here in GA in the morning. I’ve been putting in 5 miles a day scouting. I usually don’t have to walk that much, but the river is so swollen it’s pushing a bunch of logs down from a tornado 2 yrs ago, and I’m not taking my nice center console through a floating log field. I was able to get ahold of my buddies AL boat today so I won’t have to hike in so far the next week.

8 days....Saw a gobbler this morning. All by himself, no strutting, just feeding along. Saw a bird two days ago, same thing. Weird for this time of year.

Where are the dead turkeys at? We need to see spurs and beards!

My first trip got messed up(my fault) or I would have hopefully had a bird or so down. Really shot myself in the foot there. Anyways, hoping next weekend is the start for me!

I’ve messed up so many times on a turkey it’s not funny. There is nothing that gets a man more fired up then screwing up on a bird that you thought was in your pocket.

I taught myself how to hunt long before YouTube. A Will Primos CD taught me how to run a diaphragm. Hell, It took me 4 seasons to kill my 1st bird. I even screwed that up. I had 3 long beards run in to 20 yds. I shot the 1st one, the other 2 flew straight up in the air, landed right beside the dead bird, and started strutting. I was so dumb founded I just watched them walk off. I could have limited out with the 3 of them that opening am.

After getting the skunk off of my back a light bulb turned on, but I still have to change it from time to time.

Holy macaroni tried a new piece of public today to scout. Gave some cuts on my mouth call to see if I got a shock gobble. Heard one way off and I was satisfied something was around. Wasnt 5 minutes later they were WAY closer and coming fast. I actually had to hide behind a tree. 1000020746.jpg

Why would you hide? Is it not season?

I've been seeing some birds but nothing strutting. I was hoping to have one pretty locked down by now since our season opens this Saturday and I was hoping to get a blind put out since I'm going to bring my kid this year (well at least the first day, then I'll see how that goes).

I set a blind yesterday in the same location I killed my bird last year on opening day. After getting everything setup, I noticed him strutting about 150 yards away. Now I just need the kid to be somewhat still and quiet tomorrow morning and we will at least have a chance.

Listened to some birds on the roost this morning. 3rd time if found them roosted in the same spot this spring. Hopefully they roost there again tonight. Youth opener tomorrow for my daughter.

Hoping she can be still enough as well lol
