Anyone try this method of climbing?

I have one legged it up a tree using a loop that was cinched around the tree...labor intensive to say the least. What kind of climbing stick was he using in the second part of the video?
 
Similar yes. I tried it with the device Justin is using and I like it better with the ascender on a rope. I have done it with the steps like @donnieballgame said but I like it better with wild edge stepps.
