Change of strategy

Guys,

I think I have given up, at least for this year on being a run & gun setup. Let me give you a little history, prior to purchasing the web, I always hunted out of either a climber or some old man made stands in trees. The whole reason for switching to climber was I felt the man made stands were getting scary. Then a few years later I lost permission hunt that property. So after a couple of years using climber I decided there had to be a lighter less bulky stand to carry in and out each time. Along came a hang on and then Guido's web. Prior to this season I had/have zero experience hanging sticks, a hang on stand or the web. The Hang on works ok but I don't like the small platform and feel like I am going to fall off. Nothing around it to make me feel safe, especially if the wind is blowing. The web is great, same weight or maybe slightly less then the hang on, but the important thing is I feel safe like I did in the climber and it is heck of lot more comfortable then the hang on.

Do to all the new learn curves of hang sticks and getting used to the web. I decided to just go setup 2 presets on the property I am hunting for use with the saddle. So now all I have to do is climb up strap in and hunt. Limit the variables for now. 2 stands location will accommodate for the most common wind directions and if that is not the case I will fall back to the climber on the wrong wind days. I struggled wearing the web while hang sticks, plus when I was all done I was sweating like crazy and never got near as high as I wanted. I understand this mainly my own fault, but with no trees in my yard to practice on it was ... I know No excuse. I just want to finish off the season using web and hope for success.

The system takes practice. You'll get there. I love preset trees. There is nothing easier than hunting a preset tree in a saddle!

I'm going the complete other direction. After hunting for almost 20 years mainly using preset hang ons and box stands I'm switching to run and gun. For the last few seasons I've come to realize I need to be moving with the deer to increase my odds. Instead of waiting for something to happen I need to be proactive and make things happen. With all the family, work and business obligations my hunting time is extremely limited so I need to maximize my time out there.
I'll admit until I'm strapped in I'm swearing at every sound I make and the sweat running down my back. But I know from an encounter standpoint I'm on the right path. Every time I set up it's getting easier, quieter and faster. Unlike most of these guys I'm not a tree monkey, and I'm deathly afraid of Heights. I have had both shoulders fixed so they don't work like they used to.
The best thing you can do is stay with it. If your not comfortable with your set up start tweaking it and setting up at secondary spots where you can keep learning. Don't quit it will start to get easier and faster the more you do it.

Setting sticks with the Web is not easy due to the whale tail hitting the sticks. That frustrated me. When I use the Web, I either have my treehopper linemans belt on underneath or a rock climbing harness with linemans loops. I use those for linemans rope. Then I climb and set sticks and platform, them come down, put on Web and climb back up. I also could wear the web on the way up without it extended. Then extend, set leg loops, then click in.

When I started transitioning, I would use a preset or climber in AM and then Web / Saddle in PM. That way, I could take time setting up and do it in daylight. And if I wasn't comfortable setting up, I could revert back to the preset.

In any case, stay safe and comfortable.

I don't think we should limit ourselves to one or the other. I use both strategies.

One thing I probably will eliminate after this season is going in blind for run-n-gun sits in the morning. I'll be sticking to presets for morning hunts.

Do what you feel most comfortable with. If you stick with it you will develop your own style after awhile. When I hunted in the web, I hunted with several different types of climbing methods. I always like going to presets because I know all I have to do is hook in and go up in no time at all. Good luck and try to stay awake in that web! Its a comfortable one!!

Presets are the easiest way to go but as others have said don't give up on other ways either. I have no experience with the web but alot of guys have said that it gets hot wearing that one. If and when you should look into the kestrel or a sit drag as they are much cooler to wear. Keep practicing regardless. Best of luck!!!

I do the same. I tried climbing one time using the web's loops for climbing and it was awful. Use a seperate climbing belt and tighten shoulder straps as tight as you can. I do not use leg straps and that helps.

Scouting aerials and going in blind in the morning and setting up is like opening a present on Christmas morning!

Other times its like walking in the DMV...

I love it all!

When I use my web the wales tail never gave me a problem climbing up and setting step. It did however catch on my rubber boots on the way down. I use lonewolf sticks. I can't remember what Butch the owner of Guido's web told me to do to help stop it. Give Butch a call he is very helpful.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I am not giving up, just want to enjoy the last few potential days I have left to hunt archery this season. I really hate to buy a rock climbing harness to wear under my web just to hang sticks, but if I have to I will. In the end I just need more practice time. I will get this figured out so I can be mobile 99% of time. With that said my climber will always be part of my setup.

I would never go in blind, even with my climber. I always had tree's picked in advanced from scouting. I just did not realize how hard to hang sticks with the web would be. When I went on Sunday to get my presets done for this week, I wore my Muddy harness I use with my climber or hang on and it was much easier then with the web on. But I was not worried about spooking stuff like I do on actual hunting days. Not that I was being foolish about it.

Thanks again and keep the good advice coming, love the tips.

Look into a tree hopper belt or contact ernie for his lineman's belt.

I fully agree with this. I have had limited success going in blind in the complete dark and finding an appropriate tree. On the other hand I have taken quite a few deer going in blind in the afternoon while using Google Earth to find spots.

Agree. Afternoon/mid-day run-n-guns are money.
