Daisy Chain

The strap I used in the video wasn’t technically his Versa Strap but a strap he made for me to be used as a gear strap but I use it for the three purposes shown and the Versa Strap can also be used to carry sticks and as an aider, and perhaps as a gear strap, just not as good of one but it’s made primarily for hanging climbing sticks.

I used the daisy chain amsteel in 1/8" (cuz it was on sale), and i cant believe how easy it is to get the sticks on and off the Tree! I like the multi tool versa strap Idea...I might have to try that. I have to admit, the first time I tried the daisy chain the step would slide (and thought I made a mistake not bringing my back up ropes) , but once i figured out i had to push it up a bit everything worked great. One of the best things i like are my fingers dont freeze while trying to untie the amsteel hitch knots with stiff fingers.

I made a few out of 1/8” yesterday and they work great. Now just need to order more amsteel to build more. Was trying to find a way to make them out of 2 pieces but wasn’t happy with the results.

I’m looking at FIDs on Amazon and I don’t see any for 7/64 size.

The purple knitting needles at Walmart work great. Just cut a 45 on the end.

Don’t think I got any of the purple ones. I ended up making some fids from some kind of t connectors I picked up at Menards. I’ll have to look to see what they’re really called. Problem is you have to grind them down to make a point and then make sure they aren’t too sharp and then use steel wool to make sure they’re smooth. I’d love to just cut down a knitting needle.
Thenice thing about mine is they have threads inside and the rope kind of screws into it and it holds pretty decent

Well, just placed an order for amsteel. Want to do this on my beast sticks. Never worked with rope before, it will be a learning experience

Great video. I'm ordering my amsteel tonight so I can try this. Thanks @PJC.
I know right? I don't even need my sticks upgraded and I want to order some amsteel to splice. Lol this site is dangerous to my bank account

lol. I totally agree. I've never had an issue with the original straps or the single steps on my LW, now I feel like I'm missing out if I don't try these mods.

The thing I made the fids from is called a screw post. $0.89.

7/64ths scares me. Especially used as a stick strap. Amsteel isn’t very abrasive resistant. The more strands that fuzz the weaker it gets. Also amsteel isn’t recommended for life line use. I’d avoid it as a tether. It’s strong for pulling but not made for the shock of a drop. I love the daisy chain idea but may try it with 1/4in and replace as it wears. 7/64s I’d be scared by the time I noticed wear it may be too late. Y’all keep a close eye on it and have a safe rest of the season. Thanks for the videos. It really helps.

My thoughts exactly, I ordered 3/16 because I want the added security. I kept looking at it trying to see the advantage of 7/64ths over 3/16 or 1/4.
The working load on 7/64ths is 160 lbs as for 3/16 its 540 lbs just don't see were the weight and cost savings out weight the safety factor. Doing the daisy chain has to weaken it some percentage also, right? I am new to this so maybe I am looking into it wrong. No matter what size I use it is an upgrade to my 10mm rope with large knots.

1/4" bridge used to scare me. lol I havent held 7/64 yet. Im still not sold this is better than versa button my 1/4" amsteel method. If I have to set the stick and lift the daisy up and around with my fingers to set it, not sure its that much easier or faster. Looks fun to try though. As for it being used as lifeline, what are guys doing with the Mantis? They have a predator style rope hooked to amsteel. Are they hooking the tag end of that rope to a hard point on the harness? Just curious as I dont have one and know it comes with amsteel bridge. I wear a rch with my diy saddle, tail end connects to the rch so the amsteel bridge is not life line.

Come to think of it, I have an amsteel bridge. Lol I know it’s not rated for a fall but there should be no free fall involved. Use at own risk as they say. Just putting the info out there.

I wonder if the daisy chain doubles the work load since it’s actually 2 lines. I don’t know but I use 1/8 in on my hammock and it’s tiny. I use a strap to go around the tree though.

I dont use mine in a free fall situation, but if I ventured into 1 stick climbing or similar where I used the saddle to support me some of the time, it could be subjected to a fall. The drop test tethrd did was impressive, but not scientific for sure.

Kenn, I don’t see what slicing the amsteel up the tree accomplishes except keeping your stick closer to where you start it. You can just compensate for how much it will slide down when you set it, if a couple inches of slide down messes up your spacing. The end result is the stick will secure with the amsteel at the same angle, whether you slide the amsteel up or just pull the stick down to set it. I know my lone wolf straps don’t have as much angle above 90deg from the tree as my amsteel rope mod. That tells me the old strap system is pulling the stick to the tree more than the rope mod systems. I’m wondering if the position of the versa button should change to give a more even pressure on both v brackets of the stick since we are changing the angle the rope is pulling the steps.
