Anyone familiar?

When using spikes, I plan on climbing back down. However, if I drop one whilst taking it off or putting it back on, I’m looking for a simple descent.
This looks promising and won’t have the bulk of a large rope. I’m ok with it being single use.
Also, if girth hitching it to the tree, I thought I could attach my haul line to the loop for retrieval. Thoughts?

That is cool looking. Thanks for sharing. Looks similar to using a Gri Gri.

Ya, but uses a much smaller line.

I'm sure they're not cheap considering they were designed for fire rescue personnel! Get a grigri 2 and 30 feet of 9mm sterling htp!

That thing looks slick! How much are they?

They don't need to be cheap...fire rescue personnel gets to spend YOUR money.

I have no experience with it. Just looking at it it looks similar in design to the madrock lifeguard which I wasn't a huge fan of. But it would only be for emergencies and would work. I don't know about this kit but other's I've seen similar the rope is for 1 time use only.

I wasn't a fan of the Madrock Life Guard either. the spring in it was too heavy for my purposes, it caused it to be slow on the grab if the tag end wasn't tended. It ended up in a rock climbing buddy's collection as a top rope belay device, what it was really designed for.

I did however get the Madrock Safe Guard. Its the same as the Life Guard but with no cam spring. It is designed as a work positioning device and is exactly what I wanted. This is now my go to descender.

My intent would be single use. Don’t want to carry a big rope if I don’t have to. I assume the device itself could be reused on a new rope. Guess I’ll have to ask.

We trialed these at work! We ended up going with a different system in the end. They work surprisingly well and would be what you’re looking for fawnzy. That being said, they’re bigger than you think. Get the dimesions and weight if you can. Let me know if you have any specific questions.

Hi Babshaft,
I’m not so concerned about the size of the device. More the line used. It looks pretty small and I’m ok with the single use application. I don’t want to haul in 30’ of 9-11mm rope.
I guess the question becomes: Can the device be re-used on a new rope? How much is the new rope going to cost? How bulky is it compared to a grigri and 30’ of 9mm rope.

It can be reused. The rope we use is pretty close to 9mm.

I honestly think you’d be better off with 9mm (or as small as you feel comfortable using) and an ATC backed up by a sterling hollow block tied in an autoblock hitch. Smaller, reusable and you could stuff it all into a small MOLLE pouch.
