DIY Kestrel Clone

Something like this: http://www.alpsoutdoorz.com/products/nwtf/hunting-vests/long-spur

This caught my eye recently. It offers what you just described with some additional storage in the back with a fanny pack. Plus it has several different configurations available. I used a large fanny pack the second half of this year and loved it.

Ah, thanks for that. I have the Alps Pathfinder pack which is a shoulder-harnessed fanny pack already, and it's heavy for what I want. This looks lighter and adds some front-side pockets, but they're the round "turkey-call-specific" variety. It's also $100 (msrp anyway). I'm thinking more like $40-50. :)

I'm so glad I joined this site! If for no other reason than to say
You guys ROCK!!
Every Mom and Dad with boys and girls should have this as mandatory reading for their kids.
Take a bow for its well deserved.
hhmmm now I know why I have 2 totes of saved tree stand harnesses ..Thanks

I can get you close: https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1...ong-spur-turkey-vest-mossy-oak-obsession-camo

Haha. I looked at this vest pretty hard this weekend as I need a new turkey vest and figured this could double for my turkey and deer hunting pack. I ultimately decided to stick to what I have for one more spring.

What to build, what to build........:smirk::smirk::smirk:

Can you design a JX3 style that is lighter weight. That has a fold out saddle bag for gear storage that hangs on your strong side. Or maybe modular bags that attach to the back?

The jx3 has a gear bag on the back. I dont think you are going to get lighter than John has it.

Yeah, I would be hard pressed to improve on John's set up. It's well thought out.
It is very well thought out. You could probably cut a little weight in the webbing and hardware because he didn’t make any changes to the harness part itself. While the jx3 is on the heavy side if you can cut 3lbs of platform and 2lbs worth of backpack it’s really not a bad net weight for the comfort it provides.

What's the final weight of these DIY saddles?
Mine weighs 1# 4.4 oz with a tubular webbing bridge attached. With my Tethrd lineman belt, ropeman 1, carabiner, and pouch it weighs 2# 5.5 oz.

How do you attach the webbing as a bridge? Tied on or sewn?

No big deal. I thought whoever had it might be on here. Thanks!!
