Doyles Gear hoist worth the bulk?

I'm currently running dynaglide and I'm not a huge fan of it. I've been eye ballin the gear hoist but just want to know if its worth the weight and bulk?

Definitely. Get the EWO molle holder and hang it off your saddle/battle belt/pack, you won’t notice it until you need it. I bought 2 of them in case the main one breaks.

I have a gear hoist and don't use it. A main reason is that you have to keep the bow attached to it and the hoist attached to you while climbing down. Unlike paracord, if you toss it down, then it will zip to your bow and smack it. Climbing down with something tied to me is a pain.

I used to lay all my paracord out on the ground prior to climbing. This causes tangles and many issues.

I now use paracord in a figure 8, but I do not lash it tightly and do not hang the bundle off my pack. Instead, I stuff it loosely in my pack's side water bottle pocket and let it feed out from there. On the end not tied to the bow, I have a small s-biner clipped to my pack so that I can't lose the whole thing. I unclip and toss the cord and small plastic s-biner to return to the ground after lowering bow. It works great.

I wouldn't say follow this video exactly, but it is one I found quickly showing the figure 8 wrap that allows the paracord to deploy without tangling.

i figure 8 my dynaglide. I hate that when I’m set up in my saddle and after I get my bow hanging having get that’s dynaglide put up. It’s always get caught on limbs, platform, sticts, etc.. I do have plenty of paracord around. I can try it but I think I’ll have the same problem.

I have one and have been using it with my climber and am going to give it a try with my saddle setup this year. This will be my first year with a saddle. What I really like about the Doyles hoist vs. paracord is that it doesn't get tangled up. When I say tangled up, I mean paracord can sometimes get tangled up on everything on the ground, like small undergrowth and limbs/sticks. It's amazing how much stuff a paracord can wrap itself around. With the Doyles hoist, the cord never touches the ground and doesn't get tangled up on debris.

The Doyle's gets caught on stuff too because it has to dangle down. It's kinda worse because you need slack to untangle it and so you have to pull slack out, try to toss around a limb, etc. Having a spring constantly fighting to maintain tension doesn't fix getting caught on limbs.

Duck decoy rope. Smaller than Doyles, can be wrapped up in a figure 8 method, and doesnt tangle.

Is it more tangle free than paracord, assuming the same figure 8 wrap?

I thought it was dumb. I bought it and used it 4-5 seasons and wouldn’t be caught dead without it. I accidentally left it across the country in a box of gear. I hunted a season without it and thought it was dumb again. Ask me in another season. I’ll probably think it’s sliced bread again.

I will say it has never failed me and it does the thing it’s sposed to do real well.

I thought it was just me but Raisins hit on everything about a retractable I don’t like. I’ll add one more, fishing up gear with a retractable is a pain & I fish alot. Dynaglide on a gear reel for me - figure 8’ing sucks too. It takes about 20 seconds to reel in 40’.

I like mine. If I want to go light I use my pull down line but it isn't as handy. Mine is mounted on my pack system so I usually take it when it has cooled down enough that I have to pack in some layers. For early season everything is packed on a battle belt and no room for the hoist.

That’s ”reel” slick! I looked at one similar, a scuba diving reel and probably the best of both worlds for an ounce counter. But I just figure 8 mine. However, I grab both ends and figure 8 both strands at once, so it’s like doing 20’ instead of 40’. Still deploys tangle free.
