Trying to find a pic of how John Eberhart uses the T screws. Been searching in here and can't find it. Seen the Eberhart workshop thread but want to see how he sets up the screws. Thanks

Man, I know John has been hanging from these for years, but this scares the crap outta me.... all I can see is a screw tearing out and falling!

yep, I wouldn't do it.

My thoughts exactly!

For the life of me I don't see why John does it this way. Why not just Girth hitch it around the tree? Seems a lot more simple to me.

@John Eberhart can I mail you a rope to use? It will save you a lot of weight and be safer. That Trophyline webbing is heavy compared to climbing rope. I have several lying around in the garage. You've helped us out so much in this pursuit, I'd love to send one your way.

He likes to hunt larger trees that would be far more difficult to wrap a rope around.

I agree I think John wouldn't be doing it unless he felt it was safe, but then again I have to agree with the others, I want that strap around the tree or I wouldn't feel comfortable. At least with the rope or the strap around the tree, you know the whole tree has to break before that lets go!

Roger,

His system is designed to be used more this way. It has a sewn loop on the end, and his tree strap is a modified TL tree strap. It is just MUCH shorter.
John, has done this much longer than any of us and more than a lot of us combined. I know he is pretty set in his system and while his system does lack some safety, it has worked amazing for him.

Thanks,
Boswell

I would hunt this way if I absolutely HAD to do it (I cant think of a reason however)...

...but if I did, you can bet I would have about a ton of Cranford T steps screwed into the tree on a heavy duty daisy chained tether. Each loop of the tether would have a step.

On second thought, ground hunting isnt so bad.

I told John on the phone one time that he was nuts for doing this; he laughed at me. I think his system is dialed in precisely how he likes it. I sleep well knowing he is safe.

I been saddle hunting for a longtime and safty was always my first priority. The old treesuit had a strap and a belt with two D rings that went around the tree it also had a climbing rope that once you were strapped in you wrapped the rope around the tree and back to it self. It was a second safty. The treesuit wasn't built as good as the TL . I sure John makes sure his set up as is safe as possible. We take chances just because we hunt up high.

John isn't changing. Plain and simple.

I'll be honest, I've only been hunting about 25 years but I've only worn a simple fall arrest system the last 20 years. The first 5 years were free climbing trees, standing on limbs, sometimes wires on a crotch, homemade tree stands, etc...never got seriously hurt....knock of wood. Even Dan Infalt refuses to use a linemans belt when using a stand to this day. he tethers off, but it's 3 points of contact 0 - 7 sticks up. he doesn't like the movement of the linemans belt.

that being said, I like guys to be safe. I see issues in John's but I've entrusted far worst.

I agree years ago I did many things I shouldn't have done and didn't take any safety precautions especially when building or hanging stands in my youth. Today I hope I am older and wiser than I was back then, plus I have too many people that rely on me to take any chances like I did back in my younger days.

Thanks,

Roger

Just because he's been doing it a long time and it works for him doesn't mean it's safe. That being said it's his own life and we are the only ones accountable for what we do out there.
