After toying with the idea of saddle hunting, I finally took the plunge and put together a DIY saddle to try out. Back on October 15 as the cold front was pushing through I decided to ditch my lone wolf and try the saddle for the first time. After walking a half mile, mostly out of the way to avoid walking through the bedding area, I snuck to the downwind side of the bedding area and tucked myself around the transition of a cedar swamp and cattail marsh. I had scouted this area the year before and new the heavily used trails and had found several beds near this transition area so I new I was in an area that was well used by the local bucks. Around 5:45 I heard sloshing through the swamp and out popped this public land 11 point. He moved through my shooting lanes faster than I anticipated so I had to move around the tree (relatively easy in a saddle!) and stop him, of course there were branches in the way where he stopped but I was able to scrouch down and find myself a small opening to sling an arrow through. Two lungs and a 100 yard track job later and I had my first saddle buck! I think I'm hooked now and I look forward to future saddle hunts and learning more about it from the seasoned vets here on the forum.
