For the "newer" guys

I never hunted from a tree stand until I moved to Tn 13 years ago. Hunting out west in the mountains was different. Lots of spot and stalk. Good glass, Good rifle and patience. Lol shooting for distance is normal with a rifle and bow.

Same here, I'd never seen a tree stand in person till I moved to Louisiana 11 yrs ago. At first it was a little weird not being able to see past 50 yrds in the woods and sitting still but it didn't take long to come to like hunting in close quarters.

I'd never done it but my brother came back from a trip visiting family in Nebraska and hunting with them....telling me stories of 2x8s with V's cut in the ends crammed in the crotches of trees. lol of course there were no safety harnesses back then either.

I also was given an old 'hug and grunt' baker climber .... lol that was trip.

The first manufactured stand I owned (can't remember the name) was made of plywood and had metal strapping that went around the tree, kinda like the Summit. You had to bearhug the tree and climb like an inchworm up and down. No safety harness. That was just about the same time they came up with that new fangled compound bow. My brother got one but I refused to use one. His bow was so much faster than mine I eventually caved and got one.

Ha - I still have 3 original screaming eagle stands. I knew Paul when he lived in Montana and he helped a young AF guy out learning to chase mature bucks in the wild places of MT. I suppose these stands just have special meaning to me...... like most of my archery gear - I just cannot bring myself to part with it.

I hunted Bear in Canada in a Screaming Eagle stand that was in the tree about 20 years. Probably still there. Gotta be the best stand ever made.

Started hunting in 1982 out of homemade stands my dad built. They were likely copied from store bought, but were 3/4" plywood with aluminum angle that folded down semi flat. Old pair of jeans made up the cradle like seat and a big chain dug into your neck as you carried it. We used screw in steps

Haha my dad had one of those .And it was state of the art.I didn’t have money to buy on so I kind of made one like it with slotted angle and plywood.I shot my first deer out of that death trap with my homemade bow sitting on the platform with my feet falling asleep because I got tired of standing.good times

I remember hanging all my stands with no linesman belt or harness. Throw one arm and the opposing leg around the tree and hang it one handed. Looked like that famous monkey with a football.

I rember dipping chains in “Tool Dip” to quiet them. I was pretty strong so the weight never bothered me back then. Today is a different story.

To go back in time knowing what I know now.
I only did this once and once was enough....LOL!

I didn't even know what a lineman's belt was!

My first stand was a homemade plywood /2x4 contraption that folded on a door hinge with 2 cables that went to eyelits in the front. I found an old lap belt seatbelt to use as a tree strap. Climbed on screw in steps a friends dad gave me, until my father caught me making holes in trees all over his woods. It eventually broke, but I lived. (no one in my family hunted so I didn't have money or knowledge of store bought tree stands but I saw a picture of one and tried to copy it I was 14)

Moved on to 2x4 platforms wedged in crotches and a old wooden ladder I'd carry around. Standing/ trying to sit on a ladder leaned on a tree was never fun after an hour or so. Eventually I started working and bought a ladder stand, then built a box blind. After that I fell into the set it and over hunt it category for years.

I remember grandpa cut 2 Vs on each end ad 1x6 and handed me rope to keep 12g from kicking me out rest was up to me to get in tree still find myself in some crazy spots like my fav stand is in a 6inch willow that is leaning about 45° 5mph winds is max for it but biggest 145inch buck came out of that stand

Back in the 1970s we just climbed climbable trees and stood on branches. Occasionally, we would find an old wooden stand that was half rotted that we would hunt from.
Then I went high tech and bought a Fox Squirrel climber, that I still have but haven't used for 30 years.
Then we started using jammers... Plywood wedged into a "Y" and lashed in.
Finally bought a few Screaming Eaglets (eaglet was the small version of the eagle). I still have my SEs. Also made a variety of homemade contraptions over the years. Some work well and I still use them.
I didnt start using a harness until the mid 1990s.
Now I have a Kestrel and Predator. Not sure how much use those old platforms will see from here on out.
I'm now indoctrinated into the saddle cult.

Wow, I've aged just reading this, lol. Going to go make a concoction of Jack, glucosamine, testosterone, cialis, multivitamin and coca cola to fight off the oldtimers disease!
