Hawk helium mods

Staring at my Heliums that I cut down to 26" wondering why I wouldn't be just as well off if I cut them down to 15" or so...

I don't think @redsquirrel still uses them, but you got any reason for me not to do this?

@Bwhana didn't you run a very mini Helium?

For the moment, I would just have 3 sticks, but I think three mini Heliums plus my platform would get me 18'
Mine were copied from @denots and are cut to about 15" with about 13" between the steps. This method drills 2 new holes through the standoffs so you use the same bolts for the step and standoffs and eliminates 2 bolts in the process.

Nice. I asked Denots to chime in on his thread too. Do you run 1 stick? 3? 4? Aiders? How many step aiders?

Thanks!

I can stretch out to 7 ft per stick using a single knaider/swaider. I used various combos of that last fall including just sticks and knaider, and one stick with/without knaider. I prefer to one stick as a weight weenie with less to carry. I only ever carried 3 sticks into the woods at max. The shorter size is better than most and they only weigh 5.4 lbs for 3.

7ft! I was thinking 6ft with a 1 step aider :D

Are kickouts more of a concern with mini sticks? Not so much if you set the versa button location properly?

The shorter the stick, the longer the aider has to be to achieve the same climbing height. I have found going from two steps on an aider, to three increases difficulty of climb. It also significantly increased risk of kicking out. For this reason I stretch my first stick to 8', and stay closer to 6' for sticks two and three. To make the climb on the first stick easier, I don't hook my linemans rope until I am on the first stick. Also, on short sticks, the button should not be to high on the stick, or the bottom of the stick can pull away from the tree. This will cause one to reach in there backpack and grab the TP. Maintenance wipe will be necessary.
