LIVE from the saddle 2023

Back in the same tree as last night, this time hung a lock on and 20’ climbing stick so my old man can sit here the rest of the season. Trails from four different bedding areas all converge to run the soft edge between the swampier area and some cedars/hardwoods. My wind is *this* close to being bad, but we’ll see how it goes. The best way I’ve heard setting up with the wind was “you want it to be almost right for them, and almost bad for you”, and this setup is exactly that right now. I don’t really have anything to lose, so if I blow it up tonight, oh well.

Sat this same stand again tonight and had two does and a buck fawn come through at about 3:30. Had already decided that the first good doe that came through was getting shot regardless of what time it was or what else was around. Fawn came in to 8 yards, doe was hanging out at about 10 yards directly behind the tree, couldn’t maneuver around without getting busted. Eventually she turned back around, got behind a tree which was my chance to draw. Held at full draw for a bit waiting for her to step out, she turned and gave me just the vitals at 16 yards. Let the shot go, all three take off and I hear a crash a few seconds later.

Gave it a bit then got down to find my arrow, walked out to where she was standing when I shot and saw her laying 40 yards away. Never actually found my arrow. Best I could figure out after getting her skinned was that the arrow hit her scapula on the back side (there was a broadhead shaped hole there) and between the quartering away shot and her reacting to it the arrow didn’t end up making it all the way out. When we skinned her the opposite shoulder was absolutely mangled. I think the arrow was stuck and as she ran the broadhead just kept slicing and did an enormous amount of damage.

I woke up way past my alarm and so did my wife (Santa works late nights building toys right now) and by the time I got my clothes on right at sunrise it was pouring rain. Four does actually came to the mouth of my drive, almost shot one with the crossbow from my garage, but they ambled off and I decided to go out anyway. I chose a tree I didn’t really want to hunt, more for safety in the rain than anything else. I’m having extreme buyer’s remorse on it though. I do this weird mental game sometimes where I pretend that I haven’t seen deer from this tree before, or all the deer will obviously go past the tree I wanted to hunt just because it’s happened a few times before…irrational of course. I know deer move past here around late morning especially if there’s some weather. I hate hunting in the rain but I’m trying to find some positives on the situation and a set of hooves would make it all worthwhile.

The rain has really picked up. It was not supposed to do this. Now weighing out staying versus going back to the house. Ohio has amazing deer but the absolute worst weather in the country.
FWIW I woke up to rain this morning too and decided to sleep in. ;) I hunt in the rain enough during October, I want cold weather (i.e. snow) this time of year.

Went to a familiar spot this AM, was a bit chilly but was set up before light, saw most deer between 8 and 9:30ish. saw 4-5 doe(hard to tell if it was a group of 3 or 4 they were moving in and out of cover) and 2 buck, problem was 3 of em saw me too so they left pretty quickly and the rest decided to not come within range for who knows what reasons. Climbed down a bit ago and pushed further into the woods in the direction all but one of them went, found a new pinch point about a half mile further from the truck with a bunch of fresh poop so I'm sitting over here for the rest of the day, hoping one of them or a different one comes back through. I've never hunted this far back into this area so not much idea what to expect. Fingers crossed.

2 pm Edit: had two come bounding through the brush behind me, about 40 yards past the hunting area border a bit ago. Figures. Hopefully one comes by on my side of the border.

After dark edit: afternoon was uneventful, other than the usual squirrels pretending to be deer.

Just doesn't feel right. Usually this time of year I'm struggling to find spots I can get the truck off the road to park because the snow is too deep. Its 40 degrees this morning and what little snow cover we had is gone.
On the plus side I've seen 4 this morning including the buck I'm after back here. He crossed the open clearcut in the same place he did the last time I saw him but he must not have turned this direction this time since its been about an hour since I saw him. At least I know he's still around.

Merry ChristmaHanukKwanzaAdanIvus for the rest of us!
The Airing of Grievances can be found in the SH Support thread (iykyk).
Rain and heavy winds all through Xmas night have resigned themselves to a calm drizzle. The ascent up this hickory was made much easier by this new spliced-eye Predator LB that @DanO Claus sent to my stocking. The sheath is much more durable than the Tethrd rope I used (Tethrd’s original ropes were better than they are now IMO) and it’s very easy to move up and down without snagging on this vicious shagbark. I also swapped my main carabiner to the BD Rocklock I also found in my stocking; it’s been 3 years since I’ve used a BD carabiner and I forgot how smooth they are for a bridge. Probably my favorite tether carabiner.
I’m grabbing my bow for any doe, any 3YO+ buck, and hoping to give the Cabela’s meat grinder I Santa’d to myself a good workout this week doing my first total butchering on a soon-to-die whitetail.
Also swapped my platform 180 degrees around the trunk, it’s crazy how perspectives can shift on even one tree with a small change in setup.

You Seem Mighty Confidant, Grinding one up before you shoot it...Good Luck Out There....

I’m up! First afternoon of the NY Holiday Hunt. They’re picking the corn today so hopefully it’s a draw not a distraction to the deer. Had a nice buck on cams over the last week. Wind quartering me from the southeast I’m facing roughly the same direction. In one of our ladder stands in the saddle overlooking a ROW.

Little late since no cell signal... foggy as hell this morning and quiet trail cam (2 days+) so slept in... calling for rain early afternoon (only light misted) so I jumped in the woods this evening...seen NOTHING. At least until I checked mail and seen 5+ running along edge of woods 100yds away on neighbors property. Oh well.

First time out in almost two weeks and first time I’ve needed mid layers. Now if the wind would settle down and the deer show up I’d be happy. 3 little dry creeks meet to my right and beds and fresh sign around me

Can you actually see through the peep at full draw?
