Was out yesterday messing with my gear and decided to make a video showing what might happen if you slip while using a rope linemans "belt" or flipline with a standard hook up and with the "X" technique we had talked about before on here. An actual belt or strap may grab in a normal linemans configuration but the rope seems to roll and slip down the tree pretty easy. Hooked up in an X formation it will only slide maybe a foot before grabbing. Gives you something to think about for sure! I know this tree is on the smaller size but I often hunt trees in this size range and I will def use the X method on those size trees!

Thanks for the video. I think part of how a lineman belt works is the friction of your body in conjuction with the belt. When I saw you posted a video, I thought "Oh my, hope he is wearing a cup". :lol: The video shows your X hook up well, but I think in reality an actual fall would work differently than your video. After seeing your video though, I question if a lineman belt would actually stop a fall, or just scrape the hell out of you as you hit the ground at half speed versus full speed? The lumberjack guys ride those poles down at an alarming rate with their lineman belt still attached. Im starting to think the lineman belt is giving us a false sense of security.

I wont be using this device, but you can see its clearly designed to prevent sliding down the pole. Maybe we can come up with something more hunter friendly(less metal) using a similar technique.
Note towards the end where he adjusts the length of the rope, whats that item called on his right side that acts like a ropeman1, but looks different? Might be cheaper and looks easier to use.

When you factor in your nuts catching on steps or a stick it makes a linemen's belt fall seem as bad as hitting the ground. O how many times have a heard one stick climbing is dangerous yet using a linemen's belt is industry standards!!!!

I've seen that before and it's not hard to replicate using rope just not as easy to adjust.

That's one thing I like about this forum is there is always good discussion on safety without guys getting all bent out of shape. If I am doing something wrong I'd sure want someone to tell me! :lol:

This was a timely post...I was wondering how safe a linesman belt was when using spurs. Im going to try the crossover method too. I just got some spurs and tried them for the first time today. Ill post a serparate post on my first try.

Hey how bout " Flingin" some of that snow down here to the south where is as rare as an honest salesman :lol: I would give up a lot to hunt in snowy conditions!

Shoot I would too! :lol: Haven't got to hunt in the snow for two years now but it always seems to come right after season is over :roll:

Our extended archery season ends on January 31 every year. It is only extended in a few counties. 2 of which I hunt regularly so if it would just snow in January I would be good but it never does :cry:

Excellent! I adjust my lineman belt a lot when I'm climbing... Loosen when I'm ascending, and tighten way down when I'm installing a step and attaching to my tether. How well does the Flingin X (I believe I created that moniker) adjust on the fly? Looks like it wouldn't do very well.

It's dicey even when hanging sticks! A buddy of mine slipped while climbing with Lone Wolf sticks, and by the time his belt caught him he had sliced his leg and forearm wide open requiring a few dozen stiches. Took several weeks until he was able to shoot his bow again.

ouch, I guess ive never worried too much about the linesman rope while using sticks or bolts. But I did when using the gaffs. The linesman belt would eventually catch on a bolt or stick....granted you may need some stitches. :shock: I didnt gaff out at all today...But the reliability of a linesman belt using gaffs does worry me.

At least you have extended archery season. My season is over the last day of December
