I really appreciate the videos and podcasts that some members on this site create that promote or give instruction to fellow and beginning saddle hunters. The problem is, I can't do videos. It seems that my good looks detract from the subject matter.:D I don't do podcasts either.

What I can do is write. From time to time I do some freelance writing for outdoor publications. Late last February I contacted Don Thomas, Editor at Large for Traditional Bowhunter Magazine. Don is an old acquaintance from way back. I expressed my interest in submitting an article on saddle hunting for their publication. He said it sounded interesting and that he could use it in one of their columns. He asked me to put something together and send him just the text. He said we'd worry about the photographic support later. I did just that and sent him my manuscript a couple of weeks ago. He contacted me yesterday and it looks like it's a go.

So now it's time to gather photos to support the article. Normally I submit my own photos with my submissions but this time I want to include photos from members of this community. So here is what I'm thinking. I'm looking for saddehunter.com members to supply the photographic support for the article. I can't post the article here naturally, since it's been submitted to Traditional Bowhunter Magazine and will become their property once officially accepted. What I can tell you is it's an article meant to introduce the bowhunting public to saddle hunting.

If you've ever wanted to have your photos published in a national bowhunting publication, here's your chance! Keep in mind, I reserve the right to crop submitted photos and I also may require a signed release from any successful submitter(s). Also, this is for a traditional bowhunting publication so photos with firearms, crossbows or compound bows will not be considered. This is not to say that a submitted photo must have a longbow or recurve in it to be considered. Any picture that will help the reader better understand how a saddle is used or that can convey the advantages of hunting from a saddle may be considered. Photos must be high resolution, in either RAW or JPEG format of at least 300 dpi.

Now don't bury me in pictures. Choose up to 3 of your best submissions, reduce the size of your photo (don't send full sized photos) and email it to me at rickyoung583@gmail.com with your full name. I want to choose the photos that I will submit within the next 2-3 weeks. Don't get upset if your picture isn't selected. I will be picking the pictures that I feel best represent the information conveyed in the article. Don Thomas may very well further pare down the photos that I submit.

I think this will be fun so get to work and give me your best shot!!

Wow!!!! This should be really neat. Best of luck Ricky. I'll be tuned in waiting for further details .

Congrats on the article! I’m sure there is plenty of photogenic submissions headed your way! Can’t wait to read the article when it goes to print

There are several traditional guys on here. I would suspect your gonna get some good quality content that will be used in your publications.

I’m a rookie so won’t be able to contribute, but very excited about the article. How awesome! I’m sure I don’t need to ask, but please share when the article is published!

Man, I can't wait to see the article! I've been a TBM subscriber since their 1st issue. I haven't missed an issue yet. It's a great magazine.
Any idea which issue your article will appear?
Wish I had some quality pics for you but I don't. Maybe I'll have some next November!!
Congrats on the article.

Tom, I have no idea which issue the article may appear in, that will be up to Don and crew. Normally they run about 6 months out so that is kind of what I'd expect.

However, I've had no photos sent to me yet so it's looking like I will likely have to create some photos myself so I've got something to submit. I thought it would be fun and a neat experience for members here to be part of this. If anyone out there is contemplating sending pictures, I'd appreciate it if you'd give me a heads up. If I need to produce some pictures for the article, I need to get working on it.

Wish I had some to help with but nothing really good in my selfies. Maybe you can grab pics from the 2017 hunting and contest harvest threads - keep us posted when you get it published!

Rick, What type of article will it be? If it's mostly informational, then some staged photos might be better than pics we may already have. Pics of run and gun set ups; carrying the set up; pics of looking up at a concealed hunter from the ground; etc, are easy to stage and may actually illustrate the idea better than "real life" pics. 95% of the articles in TBM have 3 or 4 photos attached, so I guess we aren't talking about a lot of pics to be published.
Don might use 1 hero photo, but I'll bet he'll mostly want the type of pics that show how different our style of hunting is. Those kinds of pics can be easily staged and wouldn't necessarily need to show what type of weapon is used.

I don't have any trad pictures. I'm assuming compounds are a no-go?

Yep. That's a negative on the wheel bows... However, that's not to say that a photo without a bow in the picture would not be beneficial. Remember, this article is to introduce fellow bowhunters to saddle hunting.

Tom, the article is to introduce fellow bowhunters to saddle hunting. I'm not looking for hero pictures but just as you stated, staged photos showing the saddles in use, maybe shown a hunter packing in to hunt to show how light and easy to transport it is, showing a hunter, maybe only a couple of feet off of the ground (but with the picture shot in a way that it might look like a hunter at hunting height) so that the picture is close up not like a picture of a hunter 20 feet up in a tree.
That's what I'm looking for is staged photos showing the saddles in use. If a picture is shot of a hunter 20 feet up in a tree then zoomed in so the reader can see in better detail, the picture quality goes down. I've only had one site member say he was working on getting me any photos. I thought there might be more interest.
Sorry for taking so long to get back to you and Greg, I'm in Illinois on a work detail and staying really busy.

I thought you'd have lots of interest, too. This forum is a wealth of helpful guys with tons of pics.
I'm just getting my rig together so I'm sure that I don't have the polished set-up that you saddle vets have, but I'll try to get some pics.
My nephew is coming to town in a week and he has some amateur photography experience and he has some decent camera equipment he'll bring. The photo quality should be magazine worthy...but I'm not sure that me or my rig is magazine worthy!

I agree with you Tom. Lots of talent on this site. There are plenty of posted photographs on this site alone that I could draw from but I'm looking for original content not pictures that have had hundreds of views. It would be great to see photos with Trophyline, Aero Hunter and Guido's Web to show variations in saddle types as well.
Pictures that will let the reader clearly see the tether, bridge as well as the saddle and showing the in tree mobility and ability to shoot in any position would be good too.

I'll look around I know I have a few. I know I have some from the Evo, I am not sure I have any from the Kestrel. I know I have some harvest photos of deer I have taken from a saddle with a trad bow, but they don't include saddle and deer just deer and trad bow.

Thanks,
Boswell

Harvest pictures are not what I'm looking for. As much as I enjoy looking at them, harvest pictures won't really fit in with what I'm trying to convey in the article. I'm trying impress upon the reader the advantages of hunting from a saddle. Pictures that show the comfort, convenience, safety and effectiveness of saddle hunting is what I'm after.

Yes, that's the type of shot I'm looking for. With a trad bow hanging or in hand would be even better.
The ring of steps is clearly shown, a plus, but not the attachment to the tree.
Photos showing a hunter wearing a saddle headed out to hunt will allow the reader to see how small, light and compact a saddle is.
Keep digging and see what you've got for existing photos or head out to the back yard shoot something to send me.
Remember, send submissions to my email address above.
Thanks
