OnX ads complaint/rant

I use base maps and it works fine. It has all the typical features that all the apps have. If it showed me an ad every time I opened it I don’t think I could stand it. I have a crap ton of pins so it would be a huge inconvenience if I had to change at this point.

I just switched back from Huntstand because OnX had the deal. But I just opened it up and wow. The pop ups. They were not there before. For me, OnX is easier to use. But the ad pops are annoying. Kinda wish I wouldn't have switched.

I will be so happy to move on from it but it's still the best I've tried for on-the-go scouting. I tried dropping back to just using huntstand because their basemaps are so much better, but I couldn't stand the UI and offline map glitches.

I use my gps for navigation because the annoyances of using any phone app. Unlocking and pulling the app up. One minuscule sweat or rain drop jacking up the touchscreen. The backlight killing your nightvision.

They've been annoying me for a long time from a culture standpoint with their incessant advertising and associating with ALL THE HUNTBROSs but the product is still the best.

And blue tooth to the Garmin watch! Holy crap that’d work for sure!!! And I’d have an excuse to buy a new watch!

Never used the watch so maybe...I just know that the graphics on my 64st is on par with a 1987 Pacman game. I mean, come on Garmin. My 64st is old, though, I bought it in about 2013 but it is still accurate, which I can't say about my Apple Iphone 6. The GPS on the Iphone will show me a mile off where I know I am.

I started off using Gaia because it was free and easy to use. I upgraded to the $30 a year membership so I could see property lines. For the last two years a couple of my buddies have hounded me to get onx so that we could share info more easily while hunting together. After reading this thread I don’t think I’ll make the switch, I’m sticking with Gaia and an old fashioned compass.

Spartan forge is waiting boys, come on over and bring your waypoints with you via export-import
What's the cost on SF? $40/yr for the works? Or?8/ month ( ~100$ /yr) can I switch back and forth?

It's for the works for 40, I haven't tried anything else. I used paid Onx for years until this year. There are some things that are better about onx for sure, but for hunting deer specifically SF really shines. And I still use the free Onx for property management etc

I went back and watched DIY sportsmans overview from last year. Can you confirm whether or not it has ads if you get the paid version? Can you save sections of maps off for offline use? Is it restricted to single state use? Does it show public land boundaries, state, FWS, WMA, etc, as well as property boundaries?

Having the historical satellite imagery is almost reason enough for me to get it. I love that feature of google earth. I remember when onX first came out you could zoom in and it would show a different satellite image, usually of the winter or fall. It was close to useless after they removed that for e-scouting.

I'd love it if Garmin would make a GPS device that had the screen and graphics of an Iphone (high definition screen with high resolution graphics) and was easy to set waypoints but wasn't a phone and didn't cost a million dollars, lol. It would need to take pictures too and have a feature to offer to save the picture to the coordinates spot you are standing in.
Take a look at Garmin watches. Might do what you want it to do. My colleagues with Garmin watches use them for their recreational running, tracking their routes and such.

Yep! I have the basic Garmin gps watch but it works well for me from fitness, skiing, hiking, scouting, and hunting. I try to limit needing to look at maps when scouting but it’s all on the Garmin explore app if needed. I have been transferring them to OnX later on. Fancier watches can show topo and even satellite images.

I don't think I'd want to navigate on my wristwatch, but can you easily drop waypoints? That seems like it would be pretty convenient.

No refund. Maybe less ads and better satellite imagery coming? 40BF0A93-EB9D-4F45-82F7-E602D7FD49C2.png

This number is the customer service text number in case any of y’all want to complain as well. I would love to see improvements but if not there are plenty of other options.

I have also used it for tracking and dropping waypoints for blood. It’s just quicker than getting out the phone.
I still use a dedicated Garmin Rino GPS. With an OnX chip. If the battery dies I can just pop in a few new AAs, which also feed my flashlight. No worries about airplane mode or running down the battery searching for signal. Or distracting myself with an entertaining screen. Yes, it's one more thing to carry, but being able to just pop a set of fresh batteries in it is hugely important to me.

Hmm... since I canceled my subscription, the obnoxious pop up isn't coming up. Isn't that backwards?
