I'm sure my son would enjoy that. He mentioned last month that there were never any kids where we hunt.

I don't know when everyone else plans on showing up. Looks like Thursday according to the registration sheet. I'm not showing up until Friday and thought I would go ahead and take care of everything today and be ready to hunt when I showed up on Friday. Didn't happen. I took for granted that if the pass and permit office was open on Saturday the registration office would be also. Well good news is I have a permit and only have to go to the registration office on Friday

How long did it take to get your permit for the folks that need to know? I think it took a good 20 minutes to get mine.

About 30 minutes but there wasn't anyone else in their and the lady went into a lot of detail and I also asked some questions about the archery qualifications and directions to the registration office etc. Very friendly and helpful. I think a group of three could get in and out in 20-30 minutes without a problem. I got the annual combo permit so we went over stuff like fishing and turkey tags that anyone getting a daily hunting license wouldn't have to. Biggest thing is getting to the registration office before 4pm if you want to be in the woods that evening or first thing the next morning.

g2 I do have a question you may be able to help me with. I was told you can't take a firearm through the gates to the registration office. Then I have had others tell me it's not a big deal just not to take the firearm out of your vehicle. That's kind of why I went to handle the registration today.

Don't take a weapon on the installation without it being registered. You only need a serial number/make/model/caliber to register it.

Could one park at the gate and walk to the registration office. That's why I haven't hunted on Stewart before.

No. You need to drive. I think you can fill out the paperwork online. The chances are slim that you'd get checked at the gate, but if you do, they won't let you on post with the weapon.

You can fill it out online. Then they call you and tell you it's ready. You still have to go by the registration office and verify your identity then they issue the permit. I guess I will call them Monday. There seems like there would be a proper procedure for someone coming from out of town to be able to show up register and hunt. On a side note it's been a long time since I rode through that area. My son said from the time we got to the hunting area until we got to the pass and permit office was the longest part of the trip. It really wasn't since it's about a two and a half hour drive but I guess it seemed that way to him. There really is a lot of land to cover there

It is a really big area. From the Campground, there are parts of the installation that will be nearly an hour drive away.

Ok, am I reading this right? I have to leave my guns at the gate? Go get the permit and go back to the gate to get said guns? Do they have lockers for them there? Or what's the story on gun storage while I'm getting permits?

I wasn't trying to make things over complicated. G2 mentioned he would escort people to the registration office and if you rode with him you could leave them locked in your vehicle for the 15 minutes or so you would be at the registration office. I'm not sure that's what he meant by escort but just assumed. The questions I asked were for my personal curiosity.

If you're arriving when when I'm available to escort you, we'll leave the weapons in a vehicle (locked at the Campground) and carpool to the registration office. That will be the easiest way.

Rub it in for those of us who can't make it ;)

That's what I'm here for. Don't forget that I've found a BBQ Pitmaster that's providing dinners for the weekend. So there's that.
