Here’s the start of my humble little collection.

Well I got a couple Missouri Meerschaum Pipes coming and 4 different tins of tobacco from Boswell's coming. Looking forward to this new adventure.

LOL, one saddle (heck, a fleece blanket and some cord!), one climbing method, one platform, one set of ropes...

I may or may not have a package arriving Friday with 3 pipes and half a dozen or so mixtures as a 'starter-pack' to sample...so I can't even pretend that one is realistic. However a midgrade MM cob and a tin of good tobacco are the price of 2-3 "decent" cigars and I should easily outlast those cigars.

Clearly you can spend as much or as little as you want on pipes. But if you buy an inexpensive option and would otherwise be smoking a cigar, it pays for itself in like 3 bowls!
You can spend as much as you want. However take it from the guy who has spend hundreds of dollars on a single pipes multiple times. Briar ain’t that good and expensive, meerschaum is fragile and expensive, and a cob is both good and not fragile.

Sometimes you just want something pretty and expensive to fondle.

My wife bought me a Peterson Aran 264 for our 17th Anniversary. I guess she’s a keeper.

I like it alot better than the Cob pipes I got. I’ve only had to relight a couple of times and the burn is a lot cooler. Or I could be just getting better at packing. Who knows…either way I’m really enjoying this little pipe.

Please never use a torch. You will kill a pipe that way. Soft flame butane only. Yes BICs use butane and definitely can be used for pipe. Though matches are preferable.

I guess i was thinking of a small flame plasma torch but I can see how that can crack the pipe. When I started and would sit with these old men on couch at smoke shop, if I remember right, they would kill ya if a guy would use a BIC on either cigar or pipe.

UOS surepost came early.

Have you gotten to try any of the new stuff yet? Curious how it was going. I’ve only smoked my pipes twice so far and haven’t gotten the hang of it yet. I’m using the Autumn Evening and I forgot to let it sit out for 30 minutes or so before smoking so maybe that’s part of the reason I kept having to relight. I went back and watched some more muttnchop videos last night for a refresher.

Do any of y’all smoke in the stand? It’s probably too much movement for me right now but deer might like the smell of maple pancakes or plum pudding lol.

When I was using a climber yes. Not in a nylon hammock. Major fire hazard lol.

Could be the lack of sitting out. Could be the pack job. Everything hinges on the pack and the tamp.

I did two weekends ago. Does came out into this field at 260yds and didn't seem to be botherd by it. They worked their way toward me but then got spooked by something lower in the field and took to the woods at about 80yds from me.

This groundhog didn't mind at all.

That’s what I went back and watched. I couldn’t remember exact how much and how hard to pack and tamp. I’m going to give it another try and see how it goes.

It's been hit and miss, and this is largely down to moisture/pack/tamp. I've had the same tobacco be easily my favorite - delicious, easy to keep burning and keep in the optimal temp range for flavor, etc. - one pipe, but underwhelm, not stay lit, alternate between too-hot and going out, etc. the next.
@Petrichor 's advice has been very helpful and many thanks for him

A few random notes - many of which @Petrichor mentions (and many others on the web do not...)
  • There's so much out there about not overpacking that it's easy to get carried away and have it be too loose with a nice easy drawing pipe - in particular up top. The part that's burning needs to be tight enough to keep burning. The part that's not needs to be loose enough to let air flow.
  • Drying is huge.
  • I've had better luck recently after getting more thorough with false lights. Don't skimp.
  • If you have a reasonable pack, you can moderate the temp of the burning tobacco by "stoking" your pipe. Partially (mostly) cover the bowl as you draw on the pipe. This speeds up the air that comes in (since it's coming in through a smaller area) and stokes the fire. You can do this to help control the temp. This is real useful.
    • This advice is an absolute game-changer as you can let the temp float up and down and get the flavor of the tobacco at different temps. Lets you keep the temp nice and low and controlled.

I feel like things are trending in the right direction, but I'm definitely not yet good enough to pick out true favorites. Everything is subject to change. First impressions:

  • The Peterson/ex-Dunhill blends feel like the most consistent. I've had the most consistent results with them. They're a finer ribbon cut, a bit drier in the tin, and easy to handle. I can see why these are well-regarded. The 965 is more my taste than the EMP I think. I'm really pissed I took Nightcap out of my cart by mistake.
  • The Escudo the first time I smoked it was amazing. Followups have been more hit and miss. It's rolled and sliced into coins so more in the prep. I probably did a better job rubbing it out and letting it dry, or packed it better, the first smoke. I tried folding it with bad results.
  • Westminster I was very unimpressed with at first smoke, but with better drying and packing I had a really nice bowl yesterday.
  • Maltese falcon I've had some really tasty hints, but less consistent burns than the Peterson blends. I've gone back and forth between overheating the tobacco and having it go out a fair bit here. It's a bit coarser in the tin with more moisture content. I might revisit this today. I feel like it's a few technique improvements from being very good.
  • Key Largo - the cigar leaf and coarser cut put a bit more premium on preparation I think. There's a noticeable dryness to this blend. I feel like I need to zero-in on the temp range a bit more.
  • Plum Pudding Reserve - I need to work on my prep on this one (plug/cake).
