Has anyone tried using this product on your metal tree spikes to help quiet them?
http://www.plastidip.com/

I have used it for a few things around the house and thought it might be useful. I am in the process of trying to make a strap on setup using the cranford rope steps on a rope ratchet but I didn't like the noise of the steps clanking around. It definitely did a great job quieting them down but because I was dipping rather than painting it seems like it added a bit of weight to each step.

I am waiting for some warmer weather and this snow to melt so I can get outside to do some real testing.

They sell cork wrap for fishing rods that I use for my platform steps,I do some rod building and found it takes that little ping out when your moving around the tree..

Do they make any type of metal sound after the plastic dip?

It depends how much you put on. I am still experimenting with how much to do. The last ones that I did I put a lot and they don't ping, but it made them a bit heavier. Just a small layer helps take away the ding but it still made a decent thud.

I dipped my Tree Bolts in them and it made a HUGE difference with those.
You can only dip the part the isn't going into the Tree though.
If you have a clean round surface to dip in, it dries very smooth and is durable.

Great point. I guess it will work for some things better than others.

Just used arosol dip on plywood WE step platform. Seems fine. Off gas is terrible

For dipping bolts, do you guys hang them up, tape the threads, and spray away? I’ve never used the stuff before, so not sure how it works. Got a can on the way though and plan to dip them tomorrow.
Also, on a 6” bolt, how much of it are you dipping? I know not to dip the threads, but to account for thick bark tree should I leave an inch above the threads clean?
-Thanks

I think usually the open top can version is used instead of the spray. Use a small gauge wire and wrap it tightly around the threads of the bolt. Bend a hook above that and dip only to your desired depth. Let it hang until dry...

But I will say, I prefer the extra strength shrink wrap instead. It is strong as all get out.
Plastidip order canceled. Ordered 3:1 marine grade 1/2” heat shrink tubing. How do you silence the hex head of the bolt? I’m assuming the tubing won’t cover that portion.

The 1/2" covers the side of the head on 3/8" allen head bolts, but it won't fit over hex heads unless you round the head on a bench grinder. It takes less than 30 seconds per bolt.
Don't completely grind off the head. Just knock the tips of the hex off similar to a bolt head being rounded off with a wrench.

What He said. Heat shrink holds up much longer than plasti dip. I’ve tried the dip and the spray on before going back to heat shrink

I know it was discussed somewhere but what is the preferred brand of HD heat shrink?

I used adhesive lined double wall from buy heatshrink.com bought a 25’ roll of it for another project and since used it for multiple things. They have a fabric heat shrink too that i thought about trying. Thought maybe it might add some grip. We use 3m products at work and their double wall stuff is hard to beat as well.
