Rappelling Methods

I have been playing around with the one stick method and realize that it would be much faster to get down the tree by rappelling. I have tried using a munter hitch backed by a prussik with pretty good success. Anyone else out there rappelling down after the hunt? If so, what knot/ equipment are you using?

I carry a figure 8 with a prusik backup, just in case. Here's a couple setups that are really lightweight and super easy to learn.

Very cool ideas.

Only way to fly. Seriously it works great. YouTube search grigri Srt, there are many videos showing setup for srt ascent and rappelling with the grigri.

I was told the Grigri was dangerous for rappelling (by an REI employee). I thought it would work just fine. How do you like it.

My understanding is that it has to do with rappelling while rock climbing and the type of anchor they use. It is approved for single rope rappelling, with proper anchoring. That is far from my expertise, but someone like @ctclimberguy could probably educate us on the subject. In the case of saddle hunting, you can secure your rope with a bowline and yosemite tie-off, or whatever your preference, and attach a paracord or throwline retrieval cord. That way you're safely anchored, then can remove the line from the tree when you're done.

I never hunt over 16 feet high and just come down very slow on a Blake's hitch or two.....a little at a time.

Most rock climbing raps the rope is running thru a set of "rings" or chains. The mid point of the rope is at the top at the "chains" & the free ends dangle down. We slide down 2 strands at the same time. Then just pull one side when we need to retrieve our rope. The grigri can be used in this way ,but it requires a different setup on the rope. For single strand rappelling on a fixed line the grigri is fine . It's just about 3x heavier than an ATC and the reason I don't bring it. If you are gonna use the grigri for SRT...sure .... But if you just need a rappel device it's heavy & pricy.

Well said! I knew your expertise would apply well here. Thanks for the explanation!
