Retracting Gear Hoist

I'll also go on record that the Doyle's has worked well. I have the flat "strap" version, and it has started to get kinky and doesn't retract the smoothest sometimes. When I need to replace, I'll probably give the rope version a go. I have been using if for about 4/5 years now.

Doyle’s is great if you don’t care about the price. Strong, good length, two options for cord or webbing…If it’s a Christmas gift then go for the big name item.
If price matters, I have posted ad nauseum about my $4.99 IKEA retractable dog leash. 20’ long I think, and rated for dogs up to 100#. My bow weighs 7#. Crossbow about 9#. It’s got the same cord as a Doyle’s and a better clip. And it’s like 8oz on the back of my saddle vs Doyle’s which is quite heavy. And I can use it as a pull-down for my rappel rope if I need to by locking the button and tugging. If it dies, I go get another one or spend another $5-10 for a heavier duty one from the farm store.

I have the Allen retractable hoist that I've used for two years. It works great, but the cord is so small it's hard to get a grip on, and don't even think about trying it without gloves.

I recently got the Doyle's webbing hoist and it works much better.
 
I got the idea from DIY Sportsman to cut a hole for the cord at the bottom of my dump pound and the hoist sits flat at the bottom of the pouch. This keeps it out of the way so it isn't banging on things and it's always attached to me.

I saw that as well. Where did you get the dump pouch from? I also thought I saw somewhere someone was selling a “custom” made one on here with a grommet for the cord to slide through, but I could be wrong.

I just went through this, trying to figure out what I wanted. I love the idea of the doyles, but don't want the weight. Looked at that Allen's, and too many bad reviews. Looked at different dog leashes, and they were all also heavy.

I ended up going with the HSS hoist. No, it's not auto retrieve, but I think it should work ok. Gotta be better than the 40ft of dyneema I use now. That stuff tangles so easy and wraps around everything it touches. Love it for a pull down rope, but hate pulling up my bow on it.

Started using a Doyle's this year and can say it is very solid and quiet. I love the plastic attachment cap system that attaches to the weapon and the rope pulls very smoothly. Threw it in the pouch from EWO and it stays on my backpack.

I use 40’ of dyneema myself. I get so tired of it wrapping around my arrows and stabilizer. I figured out if I lay my bow quiver down on the ground it’s not as bad. The worst part is the tangling in the brush. I’m going a different way next yr.

Exactly. If it's not brush and limbs and leaves and my feet it's getting tangled on, it's my bow, sight, quiver, stabilizer, etc. I've tried the figure 8 method and it's great for keeping it from getting tangled, but I cant get it to unravel smoothly without either getting stuck or pulling the whole figure 8 out of my pouch and then the tangle starts.

I’ve tried to love my Doyles, had it for years. I agree that it is smooth and works well, but I find it too heavy and bulky. I have tried just about everything and I come back to a good quality paracord (~30feet) with two nite ize S plastic carabiners, one on each end. They are quiet and strong. Clip one end to bow, clip other end to saddle or saddle pouch. I don’t know how to describe it, but there are some paracords that work better than others and don’t snag or tangle as much.

The figure eight wrap on my fingers seems to work well for me.

I clip to the bottom of my bow and pull with the fletching of my arrows up. This prevents my arrows from dragging and getting mud or debris in the nocks. I lower the bow the same way.

I also use this same rope as my pull down rope when I rappel.

yeah it's cheap, but it's light and it works. I retie them and put a s-biner on it off the get go. wish it was 40ft instead of 30.
