Scent-Lok, or HECS or neither

I have actually tried the Hecs suit. In my opinion it works to some extent. I have walked in on deer and before and had them freeze and just stare. If i keep trucking hard they will blow the trick is to move slow and you can lessen ground between you and them.

I was in my saddle and had 7 doe come by and feed under me. One the oldest one saw movement by me and began to investigate. She circled upwind and downwind of me staring at me but not blowing. She ended up calming downand continuing to feed for about 30 minutes. The others had no idea i was there.

I think if you incorporate both in your game together it will be a sure fire way to success. The hecs suit is super light breathable and see through to the eye so i would treat it as a base layer.

@MCDM if you are using the HECS as a base layer, then how can it still work of you put another layer over it? I am not that familiar with it, as I am sure you can tell.

It is supposed to block the EMF that the body naturally radiates. EMF = electro-magneitc field, a field generated by charged objects/bodies.

The way it works in principle is that of a faraday cage, that traps charges, not letting them escape to the outside. A faraday cage (those pinholes you see through the door glass) is what makes microwave ovens safe to use.

So you just need it to cover your body, but I think making it a base layer is just convenient.

Exactly like @pesqimon wrote!! The thing is you still have to move slow. Alot of people think that they can put it on and barrel through the woods. The shop i hang out at the owner swears by the suit. He has shots of hawks and owls on his treestand while sitting in it. He also has had several encounters with walking through fields while hunting in kansas right past does and bucks. I incorporate it with my Sitka gear as I prefer Sitka over the other brands. I practice a scent control regime as any other hunter would. For what we pay on gear the Hecs can be bought pretty reasonable and is easy to implement in any hunters arsenal.

I should add that the science is not new. But is cutting edge. We all have wondered what the sixth sense is when that deer is like coming and coming then stops and just says eh ill go this way instead. Hocus pocus maybe but in my year long experience I have seen so effect that the science may be valid but only by field experience. Lol im not that smart just balsy to try anything once!!

Unless you can provide evidence that deer sense and respond to magnetic fields, you can't even begin to claim (scientifically) that HECS works. I am aware of nothing that even suggests deer do this.

Until they provide that evidence, don't give money to snake oil salesmen.

I have walked up to deer right in the open by walking slow and even shot a doe with my self bow by making slow movements in a hay field. I have had owls sit in a tree branch right next to me and have had all kinds of other close encounters without hecs or scent lok. I had a turkey close enough to reach out and grab last year and I wasn't wearing hecs. Just saying.

To each there own i guess. I just know these things aren't for me.

By approaching from downwind & behind a tree I was able to catch & kill a bedded buck with a pocket knife.

I was within feet of the buck for minutes with the wind blowing hard in my face.

Moving at a snails pace quietly into wind from out of view behind its bedding tree worked. I had been sweating for hrs in the FL swamp before hand.

I chalk it up to woodmanship/luck but maybe his magnetic field sensor was faulty.

Im not discrediting the Hecs claim and no I don’t always wear mine. All i was doing was adding my experience with it. It didn’t negatively affect my hunts at all. Every peice of gear and scent ever produced work at least once To say it can’t work well I’ll let ya’ll figure that out!!

I’m always skeptical but my guess is it wouldn’t hurt to wear HECS. It may possibly help but it’s kind of a faith thing right now. At some pt technology may prove that it works great. Animals have many heightened senses over us & we know that certain sharks and fish detect electric fields for locating prey.

Plus if it give someone confidence then go for it.

Scent Lok and HEC's kinda reminds me of this story....

"The Emperor's New Clothes" is a short tale written by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, about two weavers who promise an emperor a new suit of clothes that they say is invisible to those who are unfit for their positions, stupid, or incompetent – while in reality, they make no clothes at all, making everyone believe the clothes are invisible to them. When the emperor parades before his subjects in his new "clothes", no one dares to say that they do not see any suit of clothes on him for fear that they will be seen as stupid. Finally, a child cries out, "But he isn't wearing anything at all!" :grinning:

So the science that carbon absorbs odours is wrong

If it worked like the advertisers say, every drug smuggler in the world would simply seal their drugs in Scent Lok and never have a worry.
It's a great idea and has made some folks a lot of money but having experimented with Scent Lok in the past, I find no place for it in my hunting arsenal.
A deers nose is hard to fool. The buying public, not so much.

Maybe they do use carbon Lots of drugs around but my question was is the science valid.
I believe in objective not subjective evidence
Carbon does reduce odor a Fact.

Does it make a difference when deer hunting. That is an unknown and impossible to prove without a controlled hunting study which will never happen

Fact. I wear clothes deer hunting so I may as well wear something that reduces odors

Fact. In a free country everybody is entitled to their own subjective opinion even if it is not true
Who is correct about scent lok and increased hunting success ? I am not sure. The subjective opinion of John Eberhardt is that it works and he does not worry about the wind. It is hard to argue with his success as a hunter

Not really sure if it allows me to kill more deer based on objective evidence but I wear clothes deer hunting and they have odor reducing carbon in them or sprayed on them and it really does not cost much because
I have to wear clothes

The hec stuff. I do not believe because I have seen no objective evidence or scientific proof that it works

If you feel using Scent Lok clothing gives you an edge then by all means wear it. Heck, we're all looking for an edge. If you have confidence in it who am I to say that it doesn't work for you?
All I know is my own experience has provided me with no confidence in the product.
