Eye splicing - 1
Me - 0
I dinked around for a couple hours and couldn't even get to the completion of the step of burying the core into the cover to create the crossover! Finally gave up (for now, anyway) I had a 12' tether. Now I have a 10' tether. Experimented with the tether since worst case, it would be a couple feet shorter and I would never use the full 12' anyway. I was trying to make a large eye for being able to put my carabiner/prussik through. Maybe a smaller eye would be easier? Maybe I will try that someday when I'm feeling extra patient! Also didn't help that my sharpie marks were next to impossible to see on predator rope. Huge pain!

Small or large, they are all similar. If this is the first one you have tried, it’ll be tough. Watch a few of the videos out there, look at the Sampson instructions. I may have included in a previous post some links. I found it takes some work, eventually it gets easier. Rwrope has a rope that looks like the tethrd rope, it’s a looser cover and splices easier. Maybe get $10+ ft of that and use it for practice? Don’t give up, you’ll get it.

The 1st one 1 i did was absolutely the worst then after that it got easier, don't give up you can do it, just make sure you are doing a long gradual taper on your core strands.

Any suggestions on how to see your marks on Samson Predator rope? Black sharpie sure wasn't cutting it. I think that was a big part of my problems. I just can't believe how easy the guy makes it look in the video from an earlier post.

I used a yellow paint marker it still absorbed into the fabric but I tried to paint a good section or the white fibers. I think nail polish would work good on the sheath also.

Good tips in the above posts. Here is another thread to look at. I posted a couple links in post #17.

So I have tried to look on Samson's web site (not at all user friendly IMO), with no luck even finding Predator. Wesspur site isn't much better. All I'm trying to figure out is whether Predator is Class I, or Class II. I want to know which eye splicing videos I should be watching.

Class 1, you should thread lock it, whip it, whatever the term is. That can be difficult due to the tightness of the rope once spliced

I used the Birion method, pull out 2 treads to mark the beginning of the eye and to lock the crossover point. Worked pretty good.

Thanks! I kinda thought so, but wanted to make sure.

When you do your final bury, it can be real tough. In one of the threads, they talked about keeping it tight as you do so, also a longer taper really helps. Have a solid anchor point to pull against. On some of them, it will seem like the rope is only moving 1/16-1/8” at a time. I have found if you work the tight spots back and forth, pound with a mallet, it all helps it loosen up a little, pull some more, then rework it, pull some more and repeat till it is where it needs to be.

White out works. Just go easy and don't glob it on.
Thanks but I have admitted defeat on spliced eyes and am opting for stitched eyes. I've done one and it was pretty easy and I have complete faith in it holding just fine.

I am a splicing veteran with 3 Predator eye splices under my belt! The first turned out great, but I think I did something wrong on the other two. Near the base of the Y, the side where the core is buried feels thinner than the rest of the eye. I think part of the core taper is in the eye rather than the the neck. Tested it at ground level with no issues, but I can't see how the thinner part could be as strong as the rest of the rope. Anyone else experience this?

It was a nightmare. I can be done, but it sure wasn't worth it. I spliced it twice and hated every minute of it. I read that the cover on the Samson Predator is tighter than their other ropes, which confirms why it is so difficult.

Yes. The splicing instructional pdf file on Sampson website actually shows it only going to the base of the Y.
