Starting to learn video editing...

Believe it or not, the hunts themselves are probably the last thing I am wanting to film.... I know it will definitely be necessary to complete the story of all the scouting and setup videos I would like to produce. But, the scouting and setup stuff is really what I’m aiming to do.

I would like to cover a lot of forage and native food source identification as well, because I feel like there is a big lack of all that for the common hunter to learn from. I will also be doing a little food plotting on a small piece of family land next year and would like to cover that, just for my own personal records.

I will keep my current channel (under my name) for gardening and foraging stuff. That way each channel is more focused, and feels less scatterbrained. I only have a few things on there so I could link to them on saddlehunter, or text someone a link instead of trying to text a video file that is too big. I figure I’ll take any videos not linked in a thread down. It will be a few months before I really post anything, because my work schedule won’t really allow for filming for several more weeks. But, I hope to start amassing some decent B-roll at the very least.
Sounds good. I just ran one camera during archery. I figured I could use a sacrificial broadhead and film myself taking the shot from the one camera after the shot actually happened and edit it in later. Identifying natural browse is a good topic. One I could brush up on myself. While acorns are a good fall food source they are just a fraction of what deer eat. I know a lot of plants deer really like in my area just from being in the woods but couldn’t I’d them. I’ve done a lot with food plots over the years. Haven’t put much on film. If you do a food plot video don’t forget to put in some exclusion cages just so people can see how much it has been utilized. To me the often overlooked thing for food plots is accessing them without spooking game. Most of us just plant what openings we have. Sometimes that’s what we have to do but I see a pile of people hang a stand where there scent gets blown in the right way but they have to walk upwind of the bedding area and through a staging area to get there.

Ya, I really wish I could afford a mavic 2, because I think some from the air views would be awesome for explaining things. That will have to wait, though.

I think I changed my mind on the mic. I don’t want to go super cheap on it. I was trying to fit in buying the osmo pocket as well, but I don’t feel like it is worth crappy audio just to get the osmo....

You can get Osmo functionality with a $80 cell phone gimbal.

Lav mics work best outdoors but are a pain. Shotguns pick up everything, even omni directional which can be good or bad. Some cheaper mics aren't terrible.

I went with the Deity D3 Pro mic to start out with, and a small handle/tripod with a shoe mount for the microphone. That should get me covered for vlogging style videos and close stuff.
I’ve also got 2 moment lenses coming. A tele lens and a wide angle. The two combined are a lot cheaper than a dedicated camcorder, but let me get fairly close.

Gotta love amazon....

Ordered yesterday, and received today. The only thing that hasn’t come in yet is the microphone, and it should be in later this week.

On a side note.... we may not get to eat for a week after this purchase.
(Only kind of kidding, this money was set aside for a specific kayak that is no longer available, and I wouldn’t have enough to save up for my next choice before season. So, kayak fund went into videography fund instead.)

Did the phone case come with the lenses?

No, it was $30 I think. Nice case, though. I am REALLY impressed with the lenses, to be honest. I used to do a bit of photography in college, and the glass in these lenses is probably as good as my $800 portrait lens from back then.

Ignore the exposure issues, because I am not re-exposing shots between lens swaps... but here are the field of view changes between the 2 lenses.

This is absolutely zero digital zoom. This is full sensor optical zoom. So, useable in MUCH lower light than the iPhone itself. And the higher magnification should help with outdoors filming.

With and without the 18mm “wide” on the 1X iPhone camera

I like the lens but like the sign on your fence better. It should be in your front yard.

Tried my first go at manual settings and color correcting in post. Thank goodness for LUT packages to get the color correction in the ballpark for me!

Well, the microphone came in. It will take a little getting used to, but I think it sounds awesome so far. It is a shotgun format microphone, and sounds worlds better than the onboard iPhone mics. Analog gain adjustments from 0 to +10 (not step adjustments, so you can change gain during a recording), and a very large foam wind screen. I will have to see if I end up needing a dead cat cover with as big as this wind screen is.

It automatically turns on when connected to my phone (or camera) and automatically turns off when disconnected (or when camera is powered down).
It charges in 2 hours and has a 51 hour run time, much longer than anything else will last in the field!

Hopefully, my work schedule will let me get out and do a bit of filming for a tree prep/camera check day.

I just got our new computer in and can now actually run a video editing software without crashing the computer, so I am going to be trying to learn how to edit videos some. Currently, the only filming gear I have is my iPhone 10s plus, but I hope to pick up a Go Pro hero black and a DJI Osmo Pocket within the next year.

I have DaVinci Resolve on the computer, and it has been a bit of a cluster trying to learn the workflow. It took me 3 hours to get resolve to play audio properly... it kept defaulting to the HDMI on my Nvidia instead of the speaker port.... finally got it going though.

Anyone have any tips or pointers for a newbie?
We do videos for our podcast’s YT channel sometimes, and we edit using Wondershare Filmora. Lifetime license is cheap, and it’s pretty easy to pick up. It’s not exactly jam-packed with features, but it does what we need it to.

My computer is a custom build from a company called “Ibuypower”. You can really hit whatever price point you want, based on your needs and budget.
Our setup ended up being $1,500 because I ran a nice 8-core CPU and a very respectable GPU so that it could handle rendering 4K video if necessary.
Also, our hard drive space is massive for a typical PC. I have 3 separate hard drives to help speed up the workflow. One super fast 1/2 terabyte boot/systems hard drive, a semi-fast 1 terabyte solid state workflow drive, and a slower 2 terabyte disk drive for data archive.

The last computer was 10 years old before it ran out of steam, because it was a powerhouse when it was bought in 2009. We are trying to do the same thing with this one. Overkill for now, so we don’t have to buy again for many years.

I edit from a MacBook but they are NOT cheap lol. I looked into a PC this time around but didn't want to be stuck using only Premier to edit. I can use Final Cut and Premier now which is nice. And I just prefer a Mac for editing and photo work myself.

What scares me is I don't have internet at home. With a PC i cant use hotspot like i could a laptop right?

Correct... at that point, you are stuck with a laptop.
There is getting to be some decent editing software for iPhone/iPad now... LumaFusion makes an iOS app version called LumaTouch. It isn’t as full featured as final cut, or Resolve, but it is good for simple edits. It will let you run up to 6 video layers and 6 audio layers. So, “simple” may not be the right word.... also, LumaTouch handles just about every video file type out there. Some of the desktop versions skip over older file formats like .AVI, which a lot of trail cam brands use for video files.
I guess it all depends on how complex you want your editing to be.

Let me ask yall this. I've mentioned to flingin but I know he has a busy schedule. Im videoing for this whole Canada deal. Would anyone be interested in making a short film out of it for me till I get a computer.
