I'm not a fan of keeping an aider stuck on my boot. I want to be able to kick the thing off my foot if SHTF.

Does this aider function well with the foot loop opened up and taking your boot in and out of it with each step?

I think so. I have the 3 step version, same step design and your foot comes out easily.

My issues with the 3 step is that it is hard to find the steps in the dark while descending. Even during the day the steps can be difficult and kick out. I'll give mine 2-3 more tries and sell if I cannot get comfortable.

yeah, i'd only run a multistep on the bottom stick.....thinking of a permanent 2 or 3 step aider (probably DIY amsteel) that lives on the bottom stick and then a carry as you go 1 step for sticks 2, 3, and 4 on the tree

Honestly time you do that you could just add another one stick. I tried the aider and just ordered a 5th stick

Why bother with the trouble of a moveable aider then?

slight weight advantage and stuff isn't hanging from the sticks and blowing around and easier to pack down because you don't have aiders in the way

i used a cayg aider that was just a webbing loop with my hawk heliums

I don’t see why you couldn’t use the same one.

Bought a set of the gen 3's off the classified here last week and got to try them this weekend and will have to say I was pretty impressed. The weight is very impressive, bite the tree well, pack up nice and foot room is not an issue. Definitely a keeper, probably going to run a 2 step aider on the bottom stick and it should work out well.

Hey, google and searching here for 5 minutes didn't do it.

Who makes the replacement real amsteel attachment for Tethrd One sticks that everyone seems to mention?

If I recall, they come in at least orange and black and I think the end is weighted so you can throw it around the tree.

Thanks for a reply with the name and/or link.

I got mine from the real Amsteel guy on Etsy. No weight on the end of his though.

I use a similar setup - 36” climbing sling.

I made something similar it works but I jammed a peice of tubing 6.5” long in the bottom I was thinking adding something in the middle to keep it closer together so it didn’t slide off the slide of the step.

Any idea what they are using for step spreaders on this?

I want to DIY a single step one of my own design (step length and attachment method will change as this will be a CAYG) and use either 1/8" or 7/64" amsteel.

I'm thinking a small diameter rubber hose/tube for automotive or some sort of small diameter plastic water line would work out.

Thoughts?

I make my own aiders. 1” tubular webbing with a 1/4” peice of delrin rod jammed inside some reinforced fuel tubing inside the webbing… it’s perfect. Steps are some what solid and spring right back to shape.
