Tips for successful ground hunting??

My son shot his first buck off the ground with a crossbow. We arrived to the double stand set to hunt I was pissed to see it had been stolen. All was locked up and I am the only person with permission on that property. I decided to sit downwind off the trail I suspected the deer would use in some cover that would hide us. At last light a inside the ears 8 point came out and feed but was a little far so I did a few grunts and the buck came . My son made a perfect shot and harvested his first buck!! Often during the rut I hunt on the ground with Montana Decoys and have the buck standing the doe bedded in the highest ridge that allows cover and makes the buck circle and come in downwind. Deadly tactic a rutted up big boy seeing that set up fires them up and had them run in to take the doe only to find a arrow.

Ghillie suit! They are fun to make and are really effective. You can make a couple of styles/colors for where you hunt and for early season and late season.
Find some netting, burlap and some fake vegetation and you’ll be set to go for around $20 bucks.

My first hunt this year, I sat on a Cabela's $20 on sale tri-legged chair that I use for ice fishing. I sat up next to a brush pile tucked in between some tall grass that had some natural shooting lanes. A buck walked in within 10 yards of me but since this is my first time experiencing a deer this close while hunting and is my 2nd year doing bow, I moved my bow to prepare for a shot and he noticed.

Hunting in a tree is great but what an adrenaline rush when you can be 5 yards away and be at eye level of a deer! Did you see the stalk The Hunting Public showed recently? That's about as epic as it gets! I think most of us started this way and are lead to believe you've got to be in a tree to get that buck! My advice? Brush yourself in real good, change your setup to favor the wind and always be at the ready. And when I mean ready that means all you have to do is pull back or pull the trigger. Happy hunting!

Folks, you can use your saddle as a very comfy ground hunting seat.

I do this all the time, especially when scouting a new area during a hunt. Typically wearing my leafy or Ghillie suit.
