Treebolts revisited

40 bolts???? WOW! I only carry 12 bolts. Almost always drill 10 bolts high (20 feet for me) and almost never leave the bolts in the tree. Put them in going up and pull them out coming down.

I have 12 bolts and usually only use 10 when going up. I've always pre drilled my trees and just carried the bolts up in a pouch on my RCH or now my kestrel. Ive never had one come out on me, if its a soft tree I drill at a little bit steeper angle. I use a regular 3/8" drill bit and just kinda wallow out the hole to get it clean for the bolt to go in and out.

Its a really good system, very compact, reasonably lightweight. Its my 2nd preferred system after my spikes

Just adding my 0.02 here. I really, really like my drill. Playing with it on my lunch break, I managed to drill 3 holes (knee, waist, and head height) in 2 minutes and 34 seconds. I think you could get up a tree with this almost as fast as with stepps. Very easy to use.

My only complaint as of now is noise. I'm going to order some stealth strips and nylon washers. That should eliminate the clank and rattle. I plan on painting my bolts with grey "stone texture" krylon paint. That should quiet them down a smidge and make them absolutely undetectable. Will most likely try to fabricate something similar to a cartridge holder to keep them separated and handy.

I plan on carrying this rig and my Kestrel with me in my turkey vest when I start squirrel hunting in September. If I see something that piques my interest, I'll prep the tree. I think it's gonna be great.

Does anyone have a good link on the pouch Warren recommended? The link in to Rogers is not working.
Thanks.

I really like the E tool pouches many of us picked up last winter

I did a search and found this notice;
Product Discontinued by Manufacturer
Buck Commander Turkey Pouch has been discontinued by Buck Commander and is no longer available.

There you go. The market for a WHW bolt pouch is wide open. Maybe you could tag team with the guys at Tetherd Nation.

I guess I don't see the advantage's to bolts vs screw in pegs? you can pre drill holes for screw in pegs too, plus you have more surface area to stand on with screw in pegs. So why are bolts better?

Costs less and you can easily pull them out when you're done hunting. Drill and install on another tree for your next hunt.

Actually the surface area is bigger than you think. It's close to a standard step.

Lighter, pack better, and faster installation when pre-drilled. I wouldn't want to predrilled a screw in step personally given the amount of play.

If it's setting a tree after 8 months, screws in are faster but it's just as easy to drill the tree and set a bolt.

Bolts are my second favorite climbing method behind spurs.

There was a company called tree hopper selling a whole system a few yrs back. Auger bit, linesman belt hand drill and ratchet cutters. This is a great way to get up the tree. We pre drilled all our stands pre season with a cordless drill and it works great. You just need to be aware of a couple things. Carrying a hand drill is a must as in cold climates sap will freeze in the holes however they will clean out quick with the hand drilling you’ve already drilled them. In our area antis mess with you. They push sticks in the holes and break them off making your climb impossible. The holes heal over from yr to yr however if you look close you can find them the following yr and redrill them much easier than drilling a new hole. We found with 2 batteries in your cordless you cold drill roughly 6 to 8 trees using a 14.4 dewalt

I would think if you drilled them in the doing the holes would grow back on

What’s everyone’s experience?

Don't quite understand what you said. Check your message.

For my area, late summer is when I drill, otherwise they grow in.

Depends on species and growing season length.
Safe bet is yes, they will grow in.
