Treebolts revisited

Sorry

If I drilled them in the spring

Would the holes all grow back in by the fall?

Thanks. After I posted I thought that might be what you were asking.
Yup. They'll grow in if you drill them too early. Late summer is good. I drill and stick the bolt in and leave them in on trees I hunt regularly.

Nice

How deep do you need to set them in the tree?

The EZ drill will set the proper depth just by bottoming out when it's as deep as it will drill. Otherwise, to just past the threads. About 3.5"

Just adding my 0.02 here. I really, really like my drill. Playing with it on my lunch break, I managed to drill 3 holes (knee, waist, and head height) in 2 minutes and 34 seconds. I think you could get up a tree with this almost as fast as with stepps. Very easy to use.

My only complaint as of now is noise. I'm going to order some stealth strips and nylon washers. That should eliminate the clank and rattle. I plan on painting my bolts with grey "stone texture" krylon paint. That should quiet them down a smidge and make them absolutely undetectable. Will most likely try to fabricate something similar to a cartridge holder to keep them separated and handy.

I plan on carrying this rig and my Kestrel with me in my turkey vest when I start squirrel hunting in September. If I see something that piques my interest, I'll prep the tree. I think it's gonna be great.

Did you find a way to make it quieter buddy?

Just wrap a rubber band around them or camo tape them first, then rubber band them together. Take them out one at a time. It works fine.

Sorry I was asking about the hand drill. Any way to make it quieter?

I did. I can get some pics up later if you want. I stealth stripped inside and out and actually cut a piece of plastic bottle into a washer to slip between the sleeve. Stealth strips actually "featured" my drill on their page.

Very quiet now and my favorite climbing method.

Is the picture still up?

I did one on each side of the sleeve. Takes a very thin piece to make sure the sleeve still spins.

The sleeve is the part the drill bit goes into when it's folded up?

It's the part you hold with one hand while you spin the handle with the other. The part you're talking about makes noise when you close it unless you strip the inside. The sleeve makes noise when drilling because it bangs back and forth.

I'll try to post a video. I have one modded and one stock that I'll try to compare. Emphasis on the "try." Took me long enough to figure out pics.

I bought 10 grade 8's and drilled a tree last weekend. I still think they will be a hassle in the dark. I am only using them to get up to my regular steps. I will leave twigs in the holes so I can feel them in the dark. I could barely see the holes in the daylight much less in the dark.

With some practice, your holes will end up at virtually the exact same spacing every time. This makes it WORLDS easier to find them. Once your spacing is down, a small headlamp is all you need to see the holes. I find most of them by feel.

I had to go out and get mine to look at it again. I use a cordless drill with the EZ Kit bit all of the time when presetting trees. I forgot how this thing works. Lol
It does have a lot of play in it. Did you make washers for the spot where the handle attaches too? That seems to be clanking a lot as well.

So you put stealth strip on the inside of the slot where the bit stores?

I use a small loop of 550 paracord to wrap around the bit before pushing the bit back into the slot. The noisiest part of using this is getting that darn bit out of the slot.
