zero turn mower recommendations

I bought a Big dog Alpha I have abused and stored out side for the last 6 years it hasn’t given me the first problem until this year. The clutch went out and I replaced all the blade spindles, blades and belts. I think it was $3000
The bad boy Elite I mentioned is $4599
I think you have to decide what motor you want and buy a mower with that motor on it. I love my Kawasaki on my big dog.
If it’s flat and your keeping it in the garage almost any mower will be fine.

I have a Grasshopper with a front deck and used it for several years but I've gone back to a John Deere garden tractor with a 54" deck, power steering, hydro static transmission and on board hydraulics. The garden tractor is much more enjoyable to drive plus a zero turn has only one purpose, to mow grass. A garden tractor can mow grass, blow snow, till a garden, pull a trailer. Myself, I feel the zero turn mowers are more of a fad however if I had a lot of stuff to mow around, or was mowing a cemetery I would want a zero turn but for home, I'll take a good garden tractor any day.

^^ this seems like a good idea-I bet with his budget he could find a used john deere garden tractor and maybe one attachment or two.

I see it’s only 1 acre. If he can keep it inside he could likely do good with a cheaper mower if not just hire a lawn guy.

Had this one 3 yrs love it no problems yet. Brand new was 3000..could downsize deck and be pretty close to 2500. 3yr warranty and best part made in USA

I’ve been a service tech for over 8 years now
Best choices:
Ferris and Scag
Kawasaki engine preferred, Briggs vanguard second
Stay away from kohler engines the newer ones are mechanical as******

I know he just bought a house but he should take that 2500 and put it down on one. Most dealers are willing to make aggressive deals this time of year so they’re not paying floor plan on the units to sit over the winter.
You will not get a good long term commercial unit for 2500

Then again you are only mowing an acre so you have to decide

A small gravely might not be bad with a Kawasaki engine. I’ve used them and worked on them

Remember a toro or John Deere or cub cadet from Lowe’s or Home Depot is not an actual toro/John Deere/ or cub
They’re made by mtd or ayp and stickered like the real deal but they’re not
Buy from a mower shop

Dixon are trash
Exmark is ok but 3rd choice
Their zero turns are balanced terribly too(watch out on hills) also
Any Troy BILT/craftsman/mtd/ etc is trash

I have a cub cadet z x series it is a zero turn with a steering wheel , sticks to a hill like glue. On year five no problems ,change belts and oil every year. I cut six acres but if you are only going cut one acre maybe go with something smaller. good luck

I use a husqvarna. if he wants a brand new zero turn watch out for deals near the end of the year. Go to the dealers not box stores. He may be able to get one with payments but with ZERO interest. That is how I got mine the payments were cheap.

My interest in a ZT is leaf clean up. My yard is a half acre at best but I get buried in leaves from huge white oaks that eat up a large chunk of my weekends cleaning up. Would a ZT with a bagging system handle this very well? I also have a 48" gate so would need to fit through that.

I agree with others. With one acre just about any mower should serve him well. I bought a cub cadet 54” zero turn this year. I’m cutting about 4 acres and the cub cadet probably won’t hold up as well as I would like but I can replace everything on it twice before I get into commercial mower price range.

Cub cadet is a long term turd
Sorry to upset any that have bought them
But anyone with one will likely endure problems

Same with hustler
The Honda engine on the hustler will long outlive the frame and chassis it’s bolted to

But the Frame and chassis will outlive the hydros and they share the same drives as the residential exmarks and bad boys. You gotta hit the 7k mark to really get anything better.

I would suggest the mulch kit for the leaves. As long as you run them over once a week you should be able to deal with whatever material you have without having to using bagger attachment. I would only suggest a bagger attachment if you're saving the leaves for compost.
