Hunting Bike?

What are y'all's thoughts on a bow/gun rack? Handlebar mounted, or something that mounts to the rear? Definitely don't plan on using any type of tote, and can fit everything but the weapon on my back.

I'm thinking a rear holder might be safer in the event of a crash?

They make a vertical gun holder. We used them on golf carts for sporting clays. If it’s close to the tire and not in a case it’s going to get full of sand, mud and anything else you ride through.

I tried a bike several years back. It was a mountain bike. With regular tires. The mud trail I was on made it seem like more work than walking. I quit on it. Went back to walking. Everything I am walking through is water ankle deep or just gumbo mud.

the only good solution I've ever found is a scabberd mounted on a kid trailer. When I don't use the kid trailer I just have it on my back. I've tried to mount scabberds on the bike and nothing has worked. I don't like handlebar mounts because bikes fall over. I like my gun way too much to bash the stock or barrel into things at speed.

I'm still a rookie but I found everything on my back worked best. Even my bow. I definitely did not like my bow on the handle bars, at least the trails I was taking.

I'm considering using my mountain bike to travel down some two tracks and horse trails where I hunt out of my camper. It could save me quite a bit of walking depending on the spot I was planning on heading to. I would still have to try it but I think I'd just use my @Anobody's bow sling to carry the bow slung across my back while riding.

I know a welder that will put one on for me.

It would probably work. I've never tried exactly that but I have bungee corded my bow to my backpack. I usually just use the bike trailer though, mostly because if we get anything I will need it anyway. My personal pet peeve is having to go all the way back to the truck just to get what I need to haul game.

Can I see the video of him doing that with an elk?

Edit-I have seen guys haul game with just the bike, usually not riding though. It's easier with the trailer though. The trailer does add weight, everything is a trade off

The bike I purchased has a 400 pound capacity. That should easily carry a deer and me.

Yeah, it definitely will, it's just a constant balancing act. You will get better at it as you go. You might also decide a trailer is easier after you've done it. It a definite pick your poison situation. Its all better than carrying it on your back walking when there is a logging road though.

Interesting thread as I have been researching this recently. What’s everyone’s thoughts on front fork suspension? Is it necessary for a pedal power bike or E-bike?

Not unless you are going over very rough terrain. I have them on my mountain bikes but we cross downed trees, rock gardens, creeks, etc. for gravel roads it’s just more weight that isn’t needed.

Sponge. Except where you may get some chain slap on the lower rear frame. Stealth strip that.
