I already have too many hobbies, so both raising Alpacas and buying Poodles are out. I'm sure both insulate, however wind is the biggest issue for me. This morning I used a light base layer with the Minus 33 Merino heavy and the Scentlok Timberfleece suit. I'm good with this setup down to about 20 with zero wind. Zero. But when the sun comes up here the wind blows. I've been leaning towards a windproof Vortex or Coldblooded suit, but the right midlayer might do it. @d_rek , you mentioned a midwieght/windproof fleece .. anything specific you recommend?
@justsomedude
Those both look like they could do it. I just read the KUIU story a few days ago. The backcountry and mountain style it's geared toward made me think it might be a little light for just hanging in cold weather. You think it's warm enough for saddle sits?
@d_rek
I do have the Vortex vest I picked up last year on clearance and it helps where it covers. I killed the camofire app because it wouldn't stop sending updates, but i try to check the website often. I'll see whats there now.
Thanks guys
I know. My wife keeps telling me no more hunting dogs unless it's a poodle. But little does she know once my lab is gone there's a boykin spaniel in her future.
How do WPG do with the cold water of late season duck hunting?I love a Boykin. I almost got one until I read up on Wire Haired Pointing Griffons. I had already put a deposit on a Boykin but then the litter didn't have enough males for my spot on the waiting list. I was actually relieved b/c by the time the pups came I really wanted the WPG. Mine rocks. He is the most loyal dog I know. And from 9 months old I could have walked him on 'heal' with no leash down a sidewalk with dogs fighting on one side and steaks lining the other side, and he would not have moved off of 'heal'. Great nose too. the only down side is that it takes him a bird or two to realize we are hunting and not hiking. I'd like a little more prey instinct - which apparently most WPG's have. Maybe mine is too spoiled because I walk him in the woods often but don't get to hunt him so much.
He and I will be out in the yak/canoe duck hunting for the first time this year (he is 2). We'll see how that goes.
