I want to try Rappelling down the tree.... I would like to use the Oplux rope because it is small and easier to handle.

What mechanical device do I need to use this rope? I open to other and all suggestions as well.

MadRock SafeGaurd is popular choice. BUT technically I think most mechanical devices are not rated down to 8mm. Many still use it and I don’t think have had any issues.

If pushing specs is not your thing you can go with a ATC or figure 8 device. Follow those up with an autoblock. Or you can go up to a 9mm rope and be in spec with the safeguard.

My rappel rope is oplux with grivel figure 8 and hollow block auto lock.

SRT I have C-IV 9mm, Madrock safegaurd, and still back it up for now, too.

All can get from DanO.

Thx....

What is SRT?
What is auto lock?
What is ATC?

Sorry for my ignorance. Been saddle hunting since 2009 but new to this rappelling thing.

How do you like the c-iv rope for SRT? I’ve considered getting some of it. I currently have htp.

It’s a lot better than HTP in my opinion. More flexible and packs way better than htp. Just costs more.
It’s the spawn of HTP and oplux. Lol

I use the Madrock Safeguard as my progress capture and rappel device. However, I opted to use Sterling Canyon C-IV as my SRT/rappelling line because the Safeguard is only rated to be used down to 8.9mm line, not 8mm. I know a lot of guys are using Oplux, but I chose to use a rope that is safe to use per Madrock.

Difference in Madlock lifeguard and Safegaurd?

I've had both. The Lifeguard is spring loaded to open under release of tension for belaying. Buy the Safeguard for saddle hunting and climbing purposes. Also, if you're using this device to attach to your bridge/tether during actual hunting time, it is recommended to back the device up with a knot (fall limiter).

How much/length of Rope do you guys carry for the rappel line.

I am assuming you have to double your climbing height if you are throwing a bag/string from ground?

If you are one sticking you only need enough line to cover your climbing height?

Roughly 35’ for both SRT and just rappelling.

There is a way to use the throw line and bring your tag end of the rope up and then loop through figure 8 loop and just use the 35’ rather than 70’.

Your throw line would have to be long though.... right?

I use pre-set paracord loops for SRT, so I use 65' of the Canyon C-IV. I'm not up to using the throw bag and managing the line in the dark:30 hours haha. Especially since the ground cover by me is pretty much all knee to waist high blueberry brush...

This video is pretty good about how to do the shorter rope. It would work with pre sets too. Just replace throwline part with preset paracord.

Might be able to cut your rope in half lol

The second throw over the branch was pretty funny. I can just imagine the tangle I could create with that. :D

I know right! Hard enough getting the first one over correctly and then to throw over another. I could see tossing it back over the first limb and it all comes down.
