How would you handle this?

I’ve tried the “Go talk to the neighbor” route. They come from a long line of a-hole family that believe that they own all the deer in the neighborhood. When I say they’ve been screwing up the hunting on purpose for 30+ years I’m not exaggerating. They have 420 acres and run a high fence operation on half of it and even when I was a kid, the grandparents who originally owned did everything they could to screw up the hunting for their neighbors. This is the neighbor to the south. They deny that they’re baiting.

You’ve been dealing with this for 30 years?

It was my uncles property for 30 years and then I acquired it. I started hunting there when I was 12 and I’m now 45. I’ve made a DNR complaint about 8yrs ago and the they did nothing except make me out to be the criminal. Yeah I’m over the BS.

Might be time to find a piece of property requiring less maintenance. Sounds like this one isn’t making you happy.

You could turn yourself in for baiting. When they come out to look around, explain the situation and go for an inspection walk where you can see the shenanigans from your property. If it ever comes up with the neighbors, you can just tell them you were reported and they walked your entire property.

Is this is a response to me or post #16? Yes, by definition it is. Yes, I would. I’m trying to figure out the best way to do it anonymously because the website complaint form isn’t anonymous. And as stated before the DNR didn’t do anything the last time I talked to them. As far as retaliation goes…I’m a retired Special Operator. I’m not worried about that. What I am worried about is becoming the “target” and having the DNR called on me for anything I do or don’t do. Hunting is my therapy and I can’t lose that.
In Ohio we can call a tip line and no name given.

I'm all for creating a habitat for deer to keep them in an area. baiting is legal here, but is just a hunting method I have no interest in.

I drove to MD to hunt with my brother and happened through PA Amish country. Two observations.

1. They live in beautiful country.
2. There sure were buggy after buggy heading opposite me with huge traffic backups in tow. But no buggies on my side of the road. How is that possible? I don't know, but I avoided Amish country on the way home.
Serious answer. I live in Amish country. They were probably all traveling to or from the same function.

The worst advice in this thread.

I'm not sure I agree there. Gotta get them out there one way or the other. They can't ticket you for not breaking the law. Wasting their time, doubtful. False report, I'd think so! But if they bust someone are they going to ticket you for false reporting? I feel like a guy could fight that one and win. In MI the judge probably baits too though, just saying. Our system is the definition of the good Ole boys club... it's bull dookie but it's reality

Wait. Amish bow and arrow hunt? Not trying to be a jerk. Seriously just want to understand.

Lancaster, PA here. Yes lots of Amish bow hunt. There are often horse and buggies tied up in the game land parking lots.

In fact - last year my friend's car was severely damaged by a horse that got scared and kicked his car.

I was in your neck of the woods for sure. I gassed up not far from the Dutch Wonderland.

1667857138723.png1667857173146.png Had an Amish kid arrow his first deer ever a few years ago on a buddies farm I hunt. Deer sporadically move through along one hedgerow, very hit or miss. Couldn't believe it, I've never seen any deer like that in the county. My experience with Amish as far as hunting goes is they will drop some coin on guns and bows, they will hunt a place to death and love to do drives, and they will often take unethical shots (just my experience). As to the OP, have you tried some habitat development to keep deer on your place (Bedding, food plots, etc) ?

So I have 40 acres in MI that I hunt and access to the neighboring 40 acres to east of me. Michigan has had a bait ban in effect since 2019 to combat the CWD spread. Last year my neighbor north of me was reported for baiting and was caught by the DNR with a truckload of bait and ticketed.

I just witnessed my neighbor on his 60 acres dumping bags of apples and corn in front of his trail cams/ladder stands. Three cams and ladders I can see from my west property line and all three have bait piles. The only reason I can see them is because he clear cut the east side of his property and I can clearly see over there now. He has stands on his west side which I can see from the road and I’d bet they have cams and bait piles too. I’m going to guess he’s been doing this the whole time since the ban went into effect. His property is a weekend hunting getaway and he comes up almost every weekend from down state to hunt.

I don’t particularly want to piss my neighbor off since we’ve never had any issues in the past but this really makes me mad knowing he killed an absolute giant over there last season and I’d bet my paycheck it was over a bait pile.

How would you approach this? The last time I called the DNR was for hunter harassment and trespassing by another neighbor and they did nothing other than make me feel as if I was the criminal.
F*** that report him. Idc about street laws in the slightest but Wildlife and Fisheries laws though i follow to a T. Poachers and outlaws are my biggest pet peives in this world. I reported my dad when i was 17 for killing over limit on squirrels. I dnt play with nature laws.

they tend to view animals in a very utilitarian way, which also explains why they run some of the largest and worst puppy mills in the country

never buy a pup from an Amish breeder

That’s a solid double standard. Run a stop sign and kill a kid because you had to rush home and call Mr. Green Jeans on daddy. Seems reasonable.

Couple years ago I got tagged for a random "compliance check". Had to essentially prove my innocence in a case where I was assumed guilty of baiting. A fella had set up several hundred yards from where I was hunting on the property line of public and private land and was baiting the public side and then hunting over it on his private land.

The green jeans had me walk her through every moment of my hunt, down to where I left the gut pile.

Of course, I passed with flying colors. But then, that dude got wind that I'd killed a nice buck in that valley and moved into it. I found a camera, bait and mineral, all of which are illegal on Missouri public lands, and you bet your bum I called him in, because he moved into a productive area and essentially ruined it for me.

The agent and I made friends, wound up going on a couple dates, in fact. That didn't work out but she caught him in his tree stand, hunting with a rifle in bow season, over bait, with a trail cam on public lands. So I guess its a happy story in the end.
