Edit: Full disclosure that I know this is a bad idea, but I am still likely pursuing some version of it so trying to be as safe as possible. Not opposed to spending money, just trying to limit expense. If buying a few 300 dollar ropes is the ONLY way to do this, so be it but I think it might not be... And yes, this flies directly in the face of my safety police online persona. I know. Parenting makes me promise dumb things sometimes.
Now on to the idea-
So I've got a crazy idea to add a lot more lights to our house than we have in years past. I want to do this safely and our house is tall. Not really sure if this is the best idea but I was thinking of putting ropes over the house in an x (so that all4 tag ends are anchored) and using that central point for a tie in/safety anchor. (Assuming I use an alpine butterfly or something and have all 3 ropes clipped together). for a variety of reasons the ladders that hook onto the ridgeline of the house are not a great idea and i don't want to anchor into the roof itself, so I'm basically trying to create an anchor point at the top center of my roof to then work from.
So yes the idea is a bit crazy (stupid?) but I have four good ground anchors, just need the actual ropes. I will not be carrying these ropes anywhere so don't care about packability but am hoping to not drop hundreds of dollars on ropes for this one task. anyone have suggestions? im looking for 80 or 90 meter ropes i think, better to have 10 meters extra on the ground than buying too short.
i will NOT do something like buy from REI, use once and return, but also have no need to spend more and buy ropes i'd bring into the woods. i jsut downt want to die or trust home depot rope for this. or maybe home depot rope is ok? i dunno.
looking forward to learning how this is a dumb idea as well.
for example - i have no idea if this is a good deal, seems like it could be. https://www.backcountrygear.com/10mm-static-rope-black/
