Went for a walk with my wife after work. On our way back we saw a decent buck standing in the neighbors field. So me and my son grabbed my bow, antlers, and grunt call. There was only about 30 mins left of light. But we went over the hill and I set up behind a tree with my son behind me in the brush. He banged the antlers together. I blew the grunt call. About 10 minutes later I see him go running across and over behind the brush. I tell me son he is there! I hit the grunt call a few more times and I see him come across right towards us. Except he is directly on the other side of the tree and in a little depressing probably less than 10 yards.. I'm drawn trying to find him around the tree, and I hear him blow quickly and start running back. I give him the old MeH Meh real loud. He stops broadside and looks back. But he is about 35-40 yards. I had my pin set at 30, so I went high and released. I heard something, but wasn't sure if it was a chest cavity popping or my arrow banging thru the brush behind him. I see him bound over the hill then over the next rise slowly trotting towards the back down to a slow walk. It's almost end of light, so we slowly work up to where he was. I look for my arrow hoping to confirm a miss or hit. But have a hard time finding it in the grass. So we go back to the house, easy dinner, grab some.flash lights and more kids on we are out on the trail.. We look for the arrow and go to the other side of the rise and find some blood. It's thin and bright red. Not good. Need to find the arrow. So we go back searching and my daughter finds it. Pretty clean except some slight blood on the vanes. No white tallow, no meat. It's pretty clean and my head looks like it hit a rock.. May explain the pop I heard. So we follow tinny drops 100yards to the back. He turned and went over into the little drainage. I found a few spots that had some significant blood. But all still light red in color. After another 50-75 yards we are back down to drops. Then fizzles out to nothing. I assume a low hit. Tracked similar to those before unfortunately. Pretty sure he will be okay. Good tracking experience for the kids. Tons of excitement. Would have been better if he was dead.
