Thoughts on a .44 Magnum Rifle for Whitetail hunting?

Usually go with the single action revolvers during rifle season, but if the weather is bad, a Skinner Bush Pilot gets the nod. 1892 takedown clone in 44M; Skinner rear sight with an XS white line front blade. It does an inch at 50 yd with Leverevolution, but I finally found a couple boxes of the...

Picked up a new saddle pistol

This one has a Cerakoted alloy grip frame. I have an all steel New Model Flattop in 44 Sp as my tractor gun; the Bowen is 5-6 oz lighter, points better for me, and would do 1 1/2-2"" at 50 yds when my eyes were better. I think I weighed it at 35 ounces.

Picked up a new saddle pistol

Leave in a week for my buddy's place in the Shenandoah Valley; this will be my 35th year hunting there, with all but one deer taken with a single action revolver. First year trying it out of a saddle...Bowen 44 Special conversion on a Ruger 3 screw Blackhawk in a Ringler Wyoming holster. Load is...

What drew you to saddle hunting?

Always been a ground hunter with trad gear and have done well enough to suit me. Ticks/chronic Lyme and copperheads drove me to the trees for early season. I'll be on the ground again with a killing frost.

Light, quick and easy. Who has the simplest saddle setup?

I don't go high; 10-12'...tend to hunt field edges and thickets around here. Have one tree with bolts, otherwise use the Sladder. Generally without a platform; just use the stirrups. So saddle (Recon), 7' Sladder, and a 12' tether with a Kong Slyde...it gets me from top stirrups to bottom...

    Sladder Climbing System

I started with a LB, and didn't do so hot. Kept at it with minimal progress, then tried a tether...much better for me. I now climb with tether/rappel rope that doubles as a pull-up rope. May be just me but I feel safer with the tether, and can get my feet in the steps easier.

What did you do today that’s related to saddle hunting?

Drilled another tree along the beanfield for bolts. Made a couple 2-move practice climbs with the Sladder using a Kong Slyde on a 12' Camo Elite tether (9mm)...works better for me than using a linesman to climb. I doubt I'll bother with a platform alot of the time; the stirrups were very...

    2024 Hunting Bows

47#, 64" Great Northern Bushbow shooting 200 grain Ace broadheads on selfnocked Sitka Spruce...around 570 grains total.

    Ticks

It's light sensitive, especially sunlight, so keep your mix in an opaque container out of direct sunlight.

Southern Boys Snake Boot Recommendations That are not Rubber and Stink To High Heaven

I've been struck twice; both copperheads and both on the foot. Once on a 3D course while looking for someone else's arrow(), and once in my woods. Both were juveniles. The one on my property was on Dec 17th a few years back...warmish day, sunny side of a hill in the afternoon. I pretty much...

You might be a trad hunter if:

You use a back quiver in spite of a jacked-up shoulder.

What did you do today that’s related to saddle hunting?

Cut a shooting lane into the beanfield. Received a Sladder a few weeks ago and still working on getting comfortable with it...have trouble getting my feet in the rungs and can't decide whether to climb with a linesman vs a tether. Using it on the lower side of a slightly leaning tree helps. It...

    How do you aim?

Instinctive, I guess...focus on what I want to hit, and release...usually pretty quick. Longbow, woodies, split finger...what can I say, I'm a Luddite. I do way more stumping with blunts than target work; pine cones, dirt clods dandelions...all at unknown ranges. I think it helps with the way I...

    Traditional bow kills 2022/2023 season.

I just received a selfbow from John; 64" 47#@27" Buffalo Runner Spirit, osage sapling bow with the sapwood still on...been shooting it for 2 days. Amazed how quiet and efficient it is, and accurate for something as crooked as a dog's leg. Three 175 Ace broadheads from 20 yards kneeling on the...

Unfortunate Events Lead to Missed Opportunities

As a veterinarian, I had to give him a pass. I did have the pleasure of neutering him at a later date...haven't seen him since.
