gifted a climber, how do I make sure it's safe?

To me, it looks like the rust is on the top side of the square tubing that the cables slide into. My guess is that it's just surface rust due to the paint being worn off by the cable pin rubbing on it or by constant fumbling in the dark trying to find the hole. (Yeah, I know how that sounds...

gifted a climber, how do I make sure it's safe?

I think the original owner could give valuable insight as to how much time it spent out in the elements . If it wasn't left out much, I don't think I'd be too worried about the cables. I still say a ground level test would tell you a lot

Totally agree, provided replacements are even still available.

gifted a climber, how do I make sure it's safe?

If worried that it's not safe, why would you want to sell it to someone else, potentially endangering them? You could open yourself up to unwanted consequences! I would make the decision to either trust my own judgement as to whether I felt safe with it and use it myself, or just scrap it. It's...

gifted a climber, how do I make sure it's safe?

I would say if you plan to use it for traditional "sitting" like a climber was designed for, yes. But, if you wanted to use it as a mode of transportation up the tree and were then going to use it as a platform for saddle hunting, that should work too? You just wouldn't need the mesh seat, then...

gifted a climber, how do I make sure it's safe?

Yep, I second that it's a Gorilla. I had a Gorilla Greyback that looked exactly like that except that the Greyback had a padded seat and backrest. That looks like a different model and I would agree that the mesh is all the seat there likely was. I have a different climber with a mesh seat just...

How to get your tether stiffer.

Especially if the camo is a tattoo!

How to get your tether stiffer.

I haven't done this to make either stiffer, per say. But I have used heat shrink tubing to protect and reinforce my sewn eyes. It certainly stiffens the covered area. Might be a bit too stiff for a tether, but I think it might be the ticket on a LB. It would also reduce the wear and tear of...

    Ring of Steps Foot Placement

I use WE Steps. My method may work with other steps as well. I have my ROS just a few inches higher than my top step. First step of ROS to the right at about 4 o'clock. First one on the left at about 8 o'clock. I can have each heel on either side of top WE Step while the ball of each foot is on...

    Fitting a 1 inch bracket onto a 1 1/4 inch post

Also, removing that much material with a file will be no easy task.

Platform or Ring of Steps... or both?!

ROS. I've been totally happy with just the ROS. Don't need anything more to carry than I have already

    Carrying ros

I carry them in my backpack till I get to the tree. For the climb, I clip them to a caribiner on my saddle.

    Best ratchet strap for ROS

I've had zero issues with a boat buckle OCB. As someone mentioned, there is a sweet spot to get it tight. I don't like the idea of a ratchet strap because of the noise. It's hard enough to get set up quietly without sounding like a mechanic wrenching on something!

    Dual Tether Ropes

If you're using the proper rope for your tether, and if it's in good condition, I totally trust a single tether. Just inspect it every time to make sure it hasn't been accidentally cut or anything.
