2024 Getting/Staying In Shape Motivation Thread

Weights last night, followed by shoveling/wheel barrowing a few pounds of gravel. Plan to run four with fartleks this afternoon. Heat index supposed to be 110.
It was still 105 when I finished the yard work yesterday evening a little after 7. Forecast is for 110-115 again today with actual of 97 I think.

On my morning hill climbs this morning I walked by this girl within 10 feet . . . twice. She was right off the path at the top where I swing around to head back down. I just kept talking to her softly and she let me walk right by. Her yearling spike is still hanging with her and that's him in the background. Pictures a bit fuzzy but my 10 year phone's camera leaves a bit to be desired and it was still fairly dark and 6:30 this morning ( I might have been huffing and puffing a bit too :tearsofjoy: ).

Tuesday's workout was digging out the lids to the septic tank and Wednesday's was filling it back in. Heat index was hovering around 95 both days. I have to say I felt a bit like cool hand Luke with the wife saying "What's your dirt doing in my hole boy?" and then "What's your dirt doing in my yard?" :tearsofjoy:

Haven’t rucked in a while but when I was regularly a pace I liked to keep was 4-5 miles per hour with 60#. Would like to formally thank the infantry for making deer hunting easier lol but also as @BTaylor said I don’t care how long it takes me to get a deer out.

Thats motoring along pretty good with 60#.

Yeah it’s a hump for sure. Minimum I would ruck with is 45#. When I was a little younger and prepping for Ranger school I would do 1-3 miles with 80-100# not timed and carrying a 5lb dumbbell. The wheelbarrowing of the dirt I’ve been getting from hand digging this pond kicks my butt more I find so haven’t been doing any extra working out lately life’s been keeping me in shape lol

Ugh tried to do a tempo run today but a bit less than halfway I started getting dizzy/lightheaded. Aborted and walked for a bit, couldn't shake it even after a trip to a water fountain so jogged home after, managed 4 out of planned 7 (2 of 5 planned tempo). Feeling very frustrated/underwhelmed with myself so far this week. I should give myself a break since it's in the 90s/feels like 99 at the moment but can't quite accept that yet. Tomorrow's another day/another run I suppose. Hope your weeks are going better, I'm sure I'll turn this around at some point.

Hang in there Dutch! The heat sure does suck! Don't lose sight of the goal, and remember why you decided to do this

Today. Used a 54# KB for the 6 minute walks.

I had a nice conversation with a jellico cat during that last uphill farmers carry. He had a groovy smile and said I could finish and that was the push I needed. I think his name was Marvin or something like that.

You're right, and thank you for the reminder. I think instead of pushing myself to follow a time goal based training plan (that my fitness may not be ready for)... I need to switch gears and push myself to chase enjoyment instead. PR times will come later if I'm still enjoying myself. Reminds me of when I was in my first few years of bow hunting, it took me a while to be ok with messing up over and over and not shooting a deer, but that led to lots of learning experiences and I've since shot a few. I still need reminders every now and then to embrace the journey/learning curve.

Any idea what may have caused the light headedness you spoke about? Do you take in extra electrolytes on the hotter days?

I think it was a snowball effect of poor sleep/nutrition the last few days and dehydration combined with the heat advisory. Basically I've been slipping in all areas this week and decided to go out and push for the planned workout in the time I had available today regardless, because it was on the plan and I was annoyed with not hitting Tuesdays perfectly. all the things that I know are errors but did em all anyway and was somehow surprised at the result.

I do take extra electrolytes generally when I'm exercising, need to ramp it up even more when it's this hot. I didn't take any before running today, just water, and usually my first dehydration symptom is headaches after exercise- got a mild one after as well/working on getting rid of it.

There's a reason marathons for the best runners in the world are scheduled in the spring and fall. Cut yourself some slack and stay after it

Been keeping up with this thread with nothing to contribute so far. I’ve been going through some health issues that lead to me dropping 30+ pounds (largely muscle) and going from “sure, I haven’t trained but I’ll run a 15k this weekend” to getting winded walking the dog. I’ve put some weight back on and feel like I’ve turned a corner, so now I’m motivated (largely thanks to this thread) to build back some fitness. Lately it’s just been light, slow, short rucks. Now my plan is to get back into some running, and I’m gonna find a 5k in a couple months as a milestone. Will probably have to start at just a couple hundred yards, so it’ll be a test of patience, humility and discipline to get back closer to where I want to be.

Man its on now. I passed my polygraph exam, which btw was the worst 3 hours of my life. Felt like a murder suspect the way they interrogate you. Onto the background investigation. Gotta FOCUS on fitness like never before now.
Congrats man!

Weighed myself today for the first time in awhile and I’m down 28 pounds in about 3 months. Nothing to brag about really, not doing the work most of you are, just basic cardio daily, little weight work 3-4 times a week, and tracking everything that went into my fat face to make sure I was in a good calorie deficit, but still good to get back to the size I should be. Deer highlight pics from the morning cardio are probably the real highlight. IMG_7352.jpegIMG_7299.jpegIMG_7275.jpegIMG_7215.jpegIMG_7174.jpegIMG_6926.jpeg
