Been a little distant lately, haven't been on much. Hoping to change that.
Anywho, November 2, I got home from work to my wife looking out the kitchen window with binos at a buck that I had been chasing for a couple weeks. He was an aggressive fella and that afternoon he was out early oushing around another decent buck in the pasture. We were supposed to have date night with no kids, but she sighs and says "well go get him!". So I got outa the house as fast as humanly possible and was in a tree behind the house about 15 minutes later, call it roughly 1600. After 10mins in the tree, deer were moving, I saw 4 shooters. A little before 1700, a tank pops out into the pasture and was sneaking across and below me, I tried grunting at him, but some fellas entering the public property close by got into an argument and were being loud. He didn't like that and turned back around and went the way he came. I was focused on him and didn't notice the buck working towards me from up hill. By the time I realized he was there and coming he at or inside 20yards. I grab the bow and get him stopped at 8 yards. Shot was great and I dont think he realized he was hit. He made it 2 hops and stood there until he fell over. It was 1715 by that point. As he is laying there I realize it's the buck I have been chasing. I got a ton of pictures of him, saw in the yard when I let the dogs out in the am before work, and saw him fighting another buck on the road on the way to work, plus my wife and sister in law saw him 6 times driving the road. He was an aggressive buck and was very killable, I'm glad I was able to capitalize on him before he made a stupid mistake in front of someone else! Spypoint_20241027_075440.jpg

Yeah all the big boys seem to ghost me more than not. That lane that buck is traveling down with the grape vines and everything just looks "bucky" to me. Glad you were able to get on him.

Great buck! Congrats!

6 shooters in your backyard during a couple hour sit?! What’s your zip code? That’s about how many shooters i see in a whole season.
It was a crazy year for hunting around the house. I typically see one maybe two in a season around, but in the 10 years I've lived here I've never seen the activity and the amount of bucks I did this year. I saw 4 really good buck consistently. There were 4 that were very visible, one being mine, and I have 100% confirmation that the other 3 were killed as well. I did have 2 random real big fells show up breifly too but I never saw them on the hoof. The craziest part is that all of these deer were frequently daylighting on heavily hunted public as well.

Any ideas what caused the increase in buck activity?

I have no way of knowing for sure, but I think that lack pf pressure from the neighbors over the past 2 years has kept alot more doe in the area. That and the pasture behind the house has been unmaintained for 3 years and is getting pretty overgrown. So there is alot more cover and browse. That just an opinion though. We also had a heavy mast year this year, for the forst tome in 3 years.

Late whitetail activity in January is primarily driven by the need for deer to access food sources, as natural food becomes scarce during the winter months, forcing them to concentrate around remaining food like agricultural fields, hard mast, or supplemental feeding areas, making them more visible and active during daylight hours to feed; this is further amplified by cold weather which increases their energy expenditure and need to find high-calorie food sources. This was an AI generated response.
