Any hope?

You draw length is typically shorter shooting trad. Not knowing if you bench press 500lbs or you are weak and old like me, only way to know is give it a try.
Also going to a Trad shoot you can usually try different bows.
Definitely not benching 500lb haha I’ll def give it a few test draws after getting a new string on it either way. Yes! There’s a few near me throughout the year that I hope I can attend and see different makes, models etc

Measure the old string for correct length of a new one. Also check your limb tips for how they are made. My guess is it would not handle fast flight strings. Consider a D97 or B55 string for it.

My 2 cents.
AMO 62” is hand written on the side along with the other specs of the bow but I’ll absolutely compare to the old one before purchasing anything. I don’t have a picture of the limb tips but I’d imagine you’re right given its age. I’ll look into those styles, thank you!

Are there benefits of one over the other with D97 or B55 strings for a recurve?

I would encourage a B50 or B55 string, they have more stretch to them where as D97 or other dyneema strings have no stretch. The tips on the cougar are not reinforced to handle a dyneema based string. Might work for a while but I personally wouldnt go that route. You will get more string follow on a shot too with B50 so might want to consider wearing a arm guard.

Excellent! Just what I was looking for, thank you!

Rule of thumb for string length, AMO-4= “actual string length” for recurves (-3 for longbows). Some places sell strings by AMO, most by actual length, so 58” for you. I like Flemish strings, really easy to adjust the brace height as you go. The strings I’ve bought from 3Rivers and RMS gear have worked great, RMS gear lets you choose colors though.

You’ll need a bow square, string wax, and some serving for tying nocks.

I was actually just looking at the flemish strings from 3Rivers so thats great to hear they perform well. I'll also check out RMS. Def need a square too. Would you recommend serving instead of the clamp on knock points?

I started with the brass points, wish I hadn’t. It’s much easier to move tied points, less likely to scrap your face if you release wrong, and they don’t crush the servings. The knot in the video works great.

Perfect! Thats a great alternative to the brass points. I appreciate you sharing the link
