I believe I got a good chance at killing a bear this upcoming weekend. Don’t have the money to do any big mount so do any of you know of a cheaper bear mount I could do? Would like to do something for my first bear.

It wasn't cheap so I'll refrain from posting the pic of my full bear :tearsofjoy:

Lol yeah I wish I could get one. Didn’t realize how much bear mounts are. Always thought a rug would be pretty cheap until I started looking into it.

Yea I was surprised how much a rug was too.

The cheapest would probably be a Euro mount of the skull. You can do it yourself if you want to save even more money. I have done probably 8-10 deer the last few years, it's not hard just time consuming. There are plenty of YouTube videos out there.

Although I have never tried it, there are also some YouTube videos on DIY hide tanning. If you have the time you could make your own rug. A bear rug would be awesome.

You could do a euro mount and cape out whole bear send out to get tanned at a tannery then do your own rug. You could also just burry the skull in soil then dig up next fall they come out great

I did a DIY skull mount (and spent my money on rugs). My wife and I shot bears on the same trip so we spent alot for the hunt and 2x rugs. It was a lifetime hunt for us though. We did it when we were stationed in AK.

I have a buddy that did a diy bear rug with it's hair on.... It looks really good.

I have another buddy who is a taxidermist. He advised that he can always just send out a hide for a hair on tan. It is much cheaper than a rug but will leave you with holes where the eyes, mouth, nose, etc are. This is the method I plan on doing if I ever shoot a bear. I just don't have time for a diy method and am too cheap to get a rug made.

Do you know how much it was for just the tanning?

No I don't recall. I can check when I see him again. I'm thinking under $300 but not certain. It was a few years ago that I talked to him about it.

I know the most important thing to do is get the hide off quickly. This time of year the fur is very thick. I was told to lay it flat and make certain it is cool before it is salted and rolled up.

He sends them out and thought it should be under $300. It would be even cheaper if you don't mind losing the claws. Maybe try calling around to some local taxidermists and see what prices they would charge. I would definitely do the Euro skull mount with a bear though.
